New series of Things Fell Apart, strange tales from the culture war by Jon Ronson, could be worth a listen. Enjoyed the first series. Here’s a link:

January 19, 2024 at 9:38 pm #279573I have been listening to this intermittently. Great coverage of our history, with lots of detail and not skimming. 400 episodes and only in the Norman period. However, it’s very American in humour and seems to presume an American audience. Fine, if you’re American, but it can be grating at times as a Brit.
January 19, 2024 at 10:28 pm #279577Been catching up on some fairly recent Decoding the Guru’s podcasts recently, mainly thanks to a Christmas present, a winter hat with mini Bluetooth speakers in it. Perfect for listening to downloaded podcasts whilst walking the dog (might look a bit odd to passers by, loudly guffawing to myself and occasionally exclaiming ‘ffs!!’). The one on Noam Chomsky was great and enjoying the recent one on Sam Harris being interviewed by Chris Williamson. This much shorter video one was good too…
January 29, 2024 at 11:04 am #280029I have been listening to this Catching the Kingpins podcast from the BBC, exploring the encrochat case and how the police used this to catch some serious criminals. The series details how the hack happened, cases of who they managed to snare with the operation (from mid-level drug pushers, to high level importers and money launderers), the people behind encrochat and more. The sophistication of the criminal operation makes dodgy Dave look small time.

January 29, 2024 at 11:13 am #280031Also, I don’t know if anyone remembers a Paul Shepherd, who played for us in the 00-01 season, managing one appearance against Torquay. Well, it is briefly mentioned that he was caught as a drug pusher in this operation.
January 29, 2024 at 11:23 am #280032Saved that for imminent listening. Cheers

Actually I do remember him playing for us, apparently when they caught him he looked proper sheepish.
January 29, 2024 at 12:54 pm #280034So you herd.
January 29, 2024 at 1:35 pm #280035DM I’m not looking to pull the wool over your eyes here.

January 29, 2024 at 2:46 pm #280038Humbug? I think not deer sir.
February 1, 2024 at 1:07 pm #280220Finished this long episode on Sam Harris last week. It takes a look at a recent interview he did with British podcaster Chris Williamson. Pretty fair on Harris I think and relatively respected. Peterson and Tate get mentioned. And the piss taking re Williamsons choice of phrasing made me laugh…better than ‘a kick in the dick’ anyway…
February 1, 2024 at 1:26 pm #280222A new shorter episode deals with that age old philosophical question, ‘are monkeys bastards?’. If I find out I’ll report back.
February 2, 2024 at 5:24 pm #280278The upshot was that yes, monkeys are bastards. Whether that’s some or all of them wasn’t covered. And Jordan Peterson is still a c…
February 2, 2024 at 5:46 pm #280279‘Jordan Peterson is still a c….’.
Conservative? Critical voice? Contributor with whom I disagree but worthy of some respect?
OK. I give up. (No need to reply .. I was only passing through Deerey and am aware that I haven’t served Heath’s full ban yet!)February 2, 2024 at 6:13 pm #280282Clown? :-)
Tbf, there will always be negative opinions of some people from liberals to conservatives and vice versa. Doesn’t really bother me that conservatives will slag off liberal voices like James O’Brien sometimes in similar fashion (and it is sometimes justified, I think). Fine by me, so long as you don’t cast aside every voice in opposition, and sometimes liberals do that towards conservatives. Still, when Peterson is making comments about Elmo, I think he maybe needs to step off social media for a while and clear his head.
February 2, 2024 at 10:25 pm #280285Still waiting for Peterson to command respect from me JI. I’m not holding my breath.
February 3, 2024 at 10:42 am #280311Obviously, Deerey.
However I’ve always advocated for a touch of the old ‘I may not agree with his opinion but respect his right to express it.’ That’s probably why I’ve struggled on here. I have an occasional look … but seeing you dismiss someone like Peterson in that way makes me remember why I ended up disappointed and felt I could make better use of my time. As has been flagged to me several times in the past ‘Its only a football forum’ but, no matter the level, its only qualities like courtesy, genuine attempts to understand and honest discourse that serve the good.
I’m pretty sure that we would do ok in a face to face but this isnt my cup of tea. All the best anyhow. ( Until I pass through again and can’t resist a comment)ps Sidey … Good job with your Israel/Palestine efforts.

I can genuinely understand why JBP appeals to you. Grifters have a way with exploiting.
February 3, 2024 at 11:56 am #280317Some people take themselves too seriously IMO. And that goes for a lot of these po faced content creators who have assumed some sort of higher status in recent times, self congratulating and jerking each other off. Suddenly experts in everything. Bandying around the latest conspiracy theory with a kernel of truth in it, as a certainty, with grim faces because apparently, the ‘woke establishment’ has it in for them. Pathetic really.

Forever the victim.Good excuse for not doing stuff like ‘Dry January’. Don’t want to add to the number of people glumly muttering ‘I’m doing Dry January’. Feckin have a drink then ya miserable sod! Too much of this ‘I’m doing this, I’m doing that…’ because I’ve succumbed to publicity and marketing. Fine, if you actually want to do it. But don’t harp on about it like a feckin martyr every day! Then February comes and they go back to their 2 pints a week usual. Turns out they weren’t the crazy guys they made out they were.
