For those who are fed up with the current position of the club, I strongly recommend you read Jack Brownsword’s Wikipedia page…. Yes you’ll be wondering if we can ever find someone as loyal in today’s game but it’s well written and warms the soul.
Yeah.
I knew Jack very well. As a teenager he gave me lifts to the OSG from Burton for a good few years. His wife was delightful.
As I understand, he contracted dementia. Tragic!
Top man!
Spot on les Jack sadly did contract dementia in his later years, wonderful servant to the club and Kevin Keegan came along to Jack’s funeral at Burton church to deliver the eulogy, thats the respect and regard in which Jack was held. If Jack had kissed the badge on his Iron shirt it would have meant something special, half the players doing it these days dont even get it.
An informative piece about a player well before time. Seemed a man of integrity and his loyalty to the club is second to none.
Be a nice touch to name a stand after him in addition to the approach road.
I can second that. As a 9 year old newly arrived from South Africa and rocked up in Burton Stather,i was told a famous footballer lived at a certain house locally. So this inquisitive 9 year old knocked on his door to enquire who he was.His wife Queenie introduced me to him in his kitchen, then showed me Kevin Keegans caps and shirts. Spent 20 mins talking to me about his and Keegans career before sending me on my way with a signed program.Jackie Brownsword was Scunthorpe United.
Wow what a nice story razoriron, speaks volumes about the man, thanks for sharing.
its more cheery than mr snore’s singing drivel
In the late 50s, the team trained at App. Frod. Jack told us where the pen. was going and we had to stop it. Happy days – and a real gent.
Bill Shankly said how good he was, you can’t get much better than that.
He was a lovely fellow but did not tolerate arrogance – Kevin Keegan will tell you that.
He would have really rated Ernest then.
