October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am #291661Agree entirely.
His “job” apparently is to dictate the play. He doesn’t have the range of passing to do that, being largely limited to 5 and 10 yard passes sideways and backwards.
So does he compensate by being a ball winner? No, seldom tackles anybody.
Is he the big physical presence that many think is required? Hardly.
Is he the teams motivator? Judged on recent team performances that’s a no as well.
What’s his strength? He’s very good at talking to the ref!October 6, 2024 at 5:42 pm #291697I forgot talking to the ref
October 6, 2024 at 6:08 pm #291698And, obviously, he trains well. I forgot that. (Mind you so do most of the others it seems, must be something about Saturdays then.)

October 6, 2024 at 7:09 pm #291701Michael Clunan is not the problem. In my opinion and the opinion of many many other fans who were at the match yesterday, the main problem is the system that Andy Butler is insisting on our team playing. We have five defenders plus he insists on Clunan playing just in front of the back five. That’s SIX DEFENDERS playing a bottom of the table side at home. Clunan should be allowed to play further forward which we have seen he is capable of and can pass the ball. He and many of our players must be frustrated too by Butlers approach to the games. Don’t forget he was man of the match nit so long ago. How can we play attacking football with so many playing in defence. The recent bad results are the fault of Butler in my opinion, who is refusing to change anything. His substitutions yesterday were ridiculous and cost us the win. We can’t expect Roberts to do it on his own every match. The midfield is supposed to be the engine room but ours is non-existent due to Butlers defensive tactics and attitude. I can’t believe he has had his contract extended now, and should not have been done until seeing how we were placed by Christmas. There will be many fans not willing to watch these defensive displays which aren’t working and not getting the results. We made Oxford look good, not being disrespectful to them, in fact they were the best team on the day.

Bang on post … AB needs to change the set up and tactics , alas do we have the personal to actually change it ..Charlton coming back may possibly help but hes gonna be rusty first few games.
This ultra defensive set up n style is a hard watch and crowds will drop.
But at least they had a good week of training ..so its just match days they are rubbish then.
October 7, 2024 at 9:38 am #291719Well,many many many many fans aren’t blinded by AB failings to see a poor player when they see one.AB is certainly at fault for picking him and allowing him to set the tempo of our dull play, just as he did last year.
October 7, 2024 at 10:56 am #291720There was a time last season where we really missed his presence. Problem now is that he has no presence to speak of. Whether that is the formation or his general all round play diminishing is the question. The formation nullifies most of the players (and scarily Butler cannot move on from the logic facing him) but I do agree that he plays safe nearly all of time and is very weak in the centre of the pitch. Dispossessed far too easily, contributes nothing as a goal threat.

October 7, 2024 at 11:23 am #291722October 7, 2024 at 12:16 pm #291724Strikes me as a player who is often busy-busy-busy, passing here and passing there (usually sideways or backwards), busy-busy, running over here and doing some pointing, busy-busy… but with absolutely no real influence and no vision whatsoever of the bigger picture.
October 7, 2024 at 12:50 pm #291725Liked by football’s chin strokers,they see things he doesn’t do
October 7, 2024 at 1:20 pm #291726He won man of the match once or twice in Aug / Sept didn’t he? Must have been doing something right then and there were plenty of positive comments around
October 7, 2024 at 1:21 pm #291727For what it’s worth I’m not a big fan of his and find his presence a bit ‘powder puff’ but he’s going nowhere so I’m hoping he and others get back to their earlier form fast.

October 7, 2024 at 1:43 pm #291729Agree, he must have strengths so play to them! It’s not hard that we should do this but midfield enforcer is probably polar opposite of his ability (not saying anybody is suggesting this role is his but we need one and quick)
October 7, 2024 at 6:32 pm #291743Clunan seems to playing better than last season, keeps us ticking along and gets a few good tackles in!
October 7, 2024 at 10:02 pm #291754*Clunan is a weak link
*The midfield is one of the major weak linksThe other obvious weak links are full backs trying their best to be wing backs, wingers being played centrally leaving us nothing out wide when we attack and the best striker in the league (DW) having to drop deep/deliver hold up play rather than being in the box ready to pounce

October 9, 2024 at 2:48 pm #291808The form of the whole team has dropped drastically in my opinion due to the defensive line-up which Butler insists on putting out every match. This is why the opposition is now looking better than we are. His stubbornness will eventually affect the gates and cost our Club dearly in support and money. Supporters tend to always direct their anger towards one player but Clunan is definitely not to blame. Last season when he couldn’t play due to injury he was badly missed and has been awarded many man-of-the-match awards. The system is not suiting our players. Beeston has done okay as a striker but I feel we are now missing his presence in midfield to play alongside Clunan, who Butler should be playing further forward and not just in front of our five defenders. We are in fact playing six in defence , so how can we attack successfully with this defensive system.
