Iron Trust populist misfire / Keegan

I guess the Keegan as an Iron legend is a matter of timing.

I was about 13 when he joined and I used to go to junior and reserve matches as well at that time so pretty much saw him in every home game in an Iron shirt. Often went with Vinnie Grimes who was a mate from school. First time we saw him Vinnie said “first team material” and he was. Not because he was super skillful but because of his amazing workrate and fearless attitude.
Every time you saw him he was just a little bit better which is something he kept doing for much of his career.

Spoke to him 2 or 3 times and just seemed a very enthusiastic but ordinary guy.

Very much an Iron legend for me. How many other players joined the Iron as kids and went on to be genuine world class and one of the best players of his generation? Clemence the only other to get anywhere near.

Legend for me certainly.

I think the Trust has got it wrong on this occasion.

Already said my preference is ‘Keegans Bar’ Ironawe.

Can only say what I thought at the time but was behind Barnard, Kerr,Deere,, Heath, Angus and Cassidy in status for me at the time.
English legend without a doubt, still for Scunny not so sure and certainly didn’t see him as much as MK did.

Heath and Cassidy legends I would agree.

Head and shoulders above the rest at that time. Angus possibly. Barnard, Kerr and Deere were good but not legends for me.

Keegan was a great player and deserves everything that is being said about him and more.
As for the statue I see the Iron Trust have donated £500 towards it !!
Thought they raised money to buy shares in the Club when they come available.

I’ve often said Terry Heath was the best player I ever saw in an Scunthorpe shirt, haven’t changed my mind on that one over 62 years watching the Iron.

No statue though and never likely to get one either Ironawe, that’s more my point, certainly don’t begrudge anything for Keegan though whatever it might be so long as it’s not an embarrassment.

A few on here should be up in arms at the trust donating £500 towards the statue, they where when the unity group were misspending money they had taken on the premise it would go to the club.

On holiday and theres being a couple of northern Ireland west ham fans (16 home games 4away) I’ve been talking to.
Scunthorpe who! was the first reaction but once you mention Keegan they realised, even more so with the 3 England captains who played for us, gave them a brief history of the club and they didn’t realise the pivoting brief we have played in the English game.
Didn’t exactly say we’d be their second team but say they’ll always look out for our results now, grandson gave them 3 Scunny stickers for their works vans which they say will put up, always a good conversational piece football they said, both a pair of brickies by trade.

I reckon most of the “regular” posters on here can recite “Barnard, Foxton, Barker, Deere, Welbourne, Atkin, Kerr, Keegan, Cassidy, Heath, Davidson” (or similar).

Keegan was just one of that band of brothers who, although they never won a trophy, are fondly remembered. However, he was the one who went on to great things. So in many respects it’s about what he did after he left the Iron rather than what he achieved whilst he was here.

I would agree, Terry Heath, Nigel Cassidy and probably Steve Deere were probably ahead of KK in the movers and shakers of that team.

Was he an England legend who played for Scunthorpe, or a Scunthorpe legend who played for Liverpool, Hamburg, Newcastle and captained England?
