Pretty nasty kit and tedious kit launch vid IMO (no doubt our fishy friends will love it) .. no way filmed in Cleethorpes as not an oily patch or dog turd in sight AND THE TIDE IS IN.

On subject of food … Harry Haddock chips n mushy peas for me lathered in Sarsons twas very nice ..BUT alas not a patch on those in Blighty places like Whitby and dare i say Steeles in Cleggy if still open.

Steele’s is very much still open and still for me does the best sit down fish and chips I’ve ever had, only serves Haddock of course non of the bottom feeder Cod crap. Say one thing about the Cods they know their fish and it’s not cod quite ironically.

In my youth, when I worked in Grimsby, local workmates gave me the tip “Never buy from a Chippy that hasn’t got a queue”. This was based on the view that the fish was cooked fresh and to order and hanging about for a few minutes was worth the wait!

Had Haddock & Chips in the famous Magpie in Whitby earlier this week (always a queue!).

Got to buy your mushy peas separately these days mind, but still top scran.

The best chippy’s always had queues and well worth the wait, particularly Carvers and Fish’s bottom of Ashby High Street. Good memories and excellent quality.

Been using Carvers for years, still the best in town IMO but Steele’s in Cleggy are a different level again IMO.

sorry about the chippy talk but before i left the UK my go to chippy was Wilsons on Frod rd ..than ran by a gentleman from the subcontinent and did excellent Indian cuisine. If i recall correctly a takeaway and sit down chippy next to the church on Brit corner was also not bad after a few shandies ..Greek fella Mappouras rings a bell.

    Steeles number 1 for me

Back to the Cod away kit .. like the colours and design just really dislike collars on footy shirts not necessary… and make no mistake they ripped off our ACG kit launch vid idea from last year.

We only ever ate fish and chips in the Magpie once. It was poor. (Mind you, it was just after the lengthy closure they’d had some years back.)
There are better places in Whitby.
The Fisherman’s Second Wife (think that’s the name) has served us well. It had some super OAP deals and a decent view.
Dunno how things are now. Must be pre-covid since our last visit to Whitby.

Fisherman’s Wife at the battery Les. More family oriented and I think it closes early evening (we never pig out at lunchtime). Trenchers on the harbour was advertising itself as the National winners of best F&C.

Mind you we went up to Fife last year to visit the so called best in Scotland and it was very average.

Whatever happened to the Hungry Fisherman? That used to be the best, back in the day.

It wasn’t all that bad when it first started, DM.
If anyone is in Sheffield at any time – go to Frymaster on Attercliffe Rd. Recently refurbed restaurant.
Cod or haddock and chips + peas etc for two. Change out of £18!
    Great staff. Comfortable.
Voted best in Sheffield year after year.
    Beautifully cooked.
Back there again with friends next Tuesday for umpteenth time this year.
(Mind you, Whitby is a bit more attractive than S9, I must admit!)

Just shows that F&C shops can polarise opinions just like footballers.

Seems like fish n chips are a hot topic in the football close season … pleased i mentioned it, i actually dream about proper fnc to the point i wake up in a cold sweat and need a shower.
Haddock chips and either mushy peas or curry sauce.. chuck a battered sausage on the side as well, talking of that its soon soapy Sunday again … wow the weeks go so quick IT WILL SOON BE FOOTY SEASON AGAIN

HF was Atlantis or vice versa ??? and what happened to Wilsons on Frod rd ?? , when in Ashby on pool nights was always Carvers

Back to the kit .. the cod fans are getting all giddy over the away shirt which is surprising as if you squint it looks like claret n Blue.

Whitby’s restaurant and takeaway (just off the Sheffield Parkway beyond Morrisons on way to Catcliffe) has a good reputation.
Posher restaurant but our last visit cost £50 for the pair of us.
Mrs Lesgeo insists on not chucking money away so we rarely go there.
Big difference between £18 and £50 – admittedly with one or two extras.

Will the cods buy this second kit it looks awfully claret and blue to me.

Isn’t it a shame that this town used to be blessed with excellent fish and chip shops, yet now we have to go out of town to get decent fish and chips.

The last decent one was on Berkeley estate but when the couple Micheal and Carol retired it too went down hill.

One chippie in Grimsby sell fish and chips for £3 (and there really good) only problem is it’s on a really grubby estate and the que is massive has you can imagine.

I remember my Mum taking me into Palace Fisheries as a kid, they had a sit down restaurant and the lovely lady CMC recalls was called Bet, she seemed to have worked there forever, well that’s how I remember it as a young un.

Had a few sit downs in Palace in the 70s. Top grub.
