Thanks Mr Kettle, that must be the most generous penalty we’ve received since the Huddersfield title game in 2007 when the guy was about 3 yards outside the area.
For the Tranmere one, it didn’t look like it hit his arm and the ball was blasted at him from 2 yards away, an incredibly harsh decision, would have been furious if that had gone against us.
Getting a goal up made all the difference as far as I could tell – gave the team a bit of confidence and the chance to sit deep and try to pick Tranmere off. If we can get a few more generous penalties like that, I think we’ve found a way to win some games!
August 31, 2021 at 9:27 am #212916Certainly looked harsh at first sight but, having seen the highlights, the Tranmere defender initially indicated his chest but then gave up. No mass protest from the rest suggesting they weren’t too unhappy. As you say, very disappointing had one like that gone against us. I’m sure one will, things like that tend to even out over a season.

Topics: 4We’ve had a fair few penalties not given, when they probably should have been, over the last few years. It’s about time the swings and roundabouts swung and revolved our way.
August 31, 2021 at 9:42 am #212921I was sat in the West Stand and it looked to hit his hand or lower arm and he did stick his arm out, whether it was intentional or not I thought it was harsh but how many soft penalties have been given against us last season, but these are the rules if your arm is in a unnatural position, the Liverpool one on Sunday the same kicked from close range and hit his knee and bounced on to his hand, maybe unnatural position but a natural reaction from James seeing he was trying to clear the ball.
August 31, 2021 at 9:43 am #212923We gave them every chance to get away with it by letting Hippolyte take it!

August 31, 2021 at 9:45 am #212925anyway how many penalties has Kettle given against us over the years, and a lot of them have been soft.

I agree that you get the rough with the smooth, just pointing out that this was a pretty rough decision for Tranmere and worth noting because I guarantee you in a few weeks someone will be moaning that we never get decisions!
August 31, 2021 at 11:17 am #212931Looked a bad decision which coming from Mr Kettle is no surprise.
August 31, 2021 at 11:50 am #212935If you was at the game it looked handball but didn’t look deliberate, but his hand was out so though it was daft I think it was more player error than Kettle, he was following the silly rules, apart from the player having a moan there wasn’t a lot of protest, to make it worse for Tranmere their player wasn’t under a lot of pressure and didn’t need to have his arm out, personally I think it hit him rather than deliberately handle, but we had plenty of dodgy penalties last season go against us so it was nice to get something our way, I am sure it will soon be our turn to have one against us.
August 31, 2021 at 1:08 pm #212942Looking at more, I think the way their player pulled his arm out of the way, to keep it away from the ball, made it look a bit like the ball had hit it. I suspect that might be why Kettle gave it.
August 31, 2021 at 8:16 pm #212975Dear old Trevor I find that he gets 80% of his decisions the wrong way round!
Always infuriates and we rarely seem to win when he refs.
He is the modern day equivalent of Gilbert Napthine from the dear OSG days.
August 31, 2021 at 10:20 pm #212991Gilbert Napthine,wow that’s a blast from the past,I do certainly remember him,but not to fondly.

September 1, 2021 at 7:51 am #213005Our group stopped marking refs two years ago.
Out of interest I took a look back at Mr K’s marks.
Incredible – highs and lows but not that much in the middle.September 1, 2021 at 8:59 am #213006I have to say, if I were a referee, I would love to be like Kettle, just giving random crackpot decisions to liven up dull games.

And was it Darren Deadman?
September 1, 2021 at 3:28 pm #213021Re the penalty. My ma always said ‘never look a gift horse in the mouth.’
Here’s to a few more like that as this new teams battles to surpass all our expectations.
September 1, 2021 at 3:52 pm #213023As George Kerr used to say, “it will say in the sunday papers it was a penalty” so that’s it, it was a penalty.

September 1, 2021 at 4:19 pm #213025Kirkby, home Burnley 15/2/92. 2 – 2.
Met my pro ref friend for a pint in Gainsborough after the game.
He said: “Don’t say a word about the ref. I speak first.”
He then listed every error from a pro point of view then said, “So, for me, he gets a zero.”
I had already reached the same conclusion. My notes said ‘Football cannot survive such men.’15/4/95 Gurnam Singh once had a zero. Lost to Donny 0 – 5. He was responsible for four of their goals. Their assistant manager said we should have had two penalties. At least SIX match changing decisions in 90 minutes.
That’s why poor performances cannot get really low marks. You have to leave room for performances like this pair.Incidentally, thought Deadman didn’t do as badly as fans were suggesting in ‘that game’. (Can’t recall what it was. And going through my notes is a time-consuming task.)

Given Wayne Bullimore missed a penalty by nearly an entire goal’s width, I’m not sure those decisions proved entirely crucial in that match.

Cliff’s red came in the immediate wake of an appalling challenge on Cleveland (who got booked for his protests), the referee should really have sent their player off before Cliff took his own revenge. Their equaliser came after two blatant fouls on Murphy, who was barged to the floor by some lump of a forward, allowing the goal to be scored.
September 1, 2021 at 4:38 pm #213027Les – you inspired me to seek out highlights of that game as I’ve never rewatched it.
You’re absolutely right that Donny’s first goal should never have stood for a clear foul on Samways, whilst we could, arguably, had two more penalties before the one we did get (although I think Alexander dived).
After that, I can’t see any blame on the ref for the rest of Donny’s goals, apart perhaps from the fifth which comes from a deflection off the referee – though I’d blame Bullimore who clearly didn’t look where he was passing the ball.
Anyway, decide for yourself!
September 1, 2021 at 5:14 pm #213031Gurnam Singh was an awful ref.
I think the one where he sent Byrne and someone else off was the second time we had him and I went into it expecting him to be shit after the first. I don’t remember who against or the year but wasn’t too long after the first if I remember right.
The first was Brighton in 2006. He sent Steve Foster off (deservedly) but then their little ginger right back ran about 40 yards and punched Foster and got away with it.
September 1, 2021 at 6:06 pm #213036Yeah. I thought I remembered Singh getting an assist.
September 1, 2021 at 6:17 pm #213038Harper goal was offside. A little hard to tell on that video but still looked dodgy.
For me – both the penalties not given – should have been. The one that was given shouldn’t have been.September 1, 2021 at 9:11 pm #213041Harper goal was offside. A little hard to tell on that video but still looked dodgy.
Not really the fault of the referee but you might be right. Not a glaring decision I would argue though.
The foul on Turnbull (or fouls?) is just mind-blowingly obvious!
September 1, 2021 at 9:20 pm #213042Not related to the Refs performance but it was some game and atmosphere against Oldham when we went down to 9.
Great times.

September 1, 2021 at 9:28 pm #213043Don’t think I’ve ever felt a feeling of such deflation since that 95th minute equaliser!
September 1, 2021 at 9:30 pm #213044It was good to recapture a little bit of the flavour, Fe. Thanks.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more furious coming out of a game than after that one! Still, the joke was on Oldham because I think it was 1st v. 2nd at the time and while we went on to win about 7 or 8 games in a row, they sank without trace. Not sure they even made the play-offs that season. Would Windass have been playing for them that season?

Don’t think he was. The player that stood out was Chris Taylor who Cliff got sent off against.
Just looked and the attendance was 7,600 for an early January game too.
September 2, 2021 at 12:16 pm #213054Chris Taylor the footballer with teflon boots, he could never keep on his feet.
