The General Election takes place every 5 years or less. How come when the question is asked to the people in power,” will the General Election take place in 2029 or sooner”,the answer is not a definite “YES”.
When the democratic right of the people is ignored, the country is in trouble.
Excuses will be made of course, all Marxist totalitarian states always use the excuse,”we are doing this for your own good.”
Worrying times and the totalitarian state is taking shape much quicker than even I imagined.

Is Trump a Marxist? He’s definitely up for cancelling the next POTUS election.

Why do these things happen? I guess when nothing seems to work, some will try anything. Extreme politics, extreme faith, something more personal like extreme drink or drugs, or even checking out forever. They’re all up for grabs.

Now, pass me the bottle. Half a pint of Absinthe will do nicely. Happy winter solstice!

IT depends on how you see the question ,it’s clearly an either or question that BPG has chosen to misrepresent to make a ridiculous point.

The government in power choose the best possible date for an election that will enhance their chances, é.g. Thatcher in 1983, only four years after the previous election.
At the beginning of 1982 she didn’t stand a chance, something happened.

Let me ask you this question Iron Age ,has any “sitting”Party ever gone over the MAXIMUM permitted term of office in peace time history? The Labour Party haven’t pledged to abide by constitutional rules, but due to their ideology are trampling over democratic decisions and this will play out in the coming years.

    BS!

“The Fixed-term Parliaments Act (2011) passed during the Lib Dem-Tory coalition years, mandated that elections be held every 5 years on the first Thursday in May. There was a caveat in place that a general election could be called if two-thirds of the House of Commons voted for an early general election or the government lost the confidence of the House.”

So Labour or indeed any other Political Party can’t trample over anyone.

And if you’re trying to find politicians who are determined to hang on to power as long as possible look no further than the House of Lords.

The next general election will be no later than Wednesday 15th August 2029, as you probably already knew.
I wonder if Don will try his recent trick, ‘vote for my preferred candidate, or else’, any guesses?

I posted it, I didn’t say it. If you were paying attention you’d see that the quote was in inverted commas indicating it was taken from the current laws regarding general elections.

It also says “The prime minister has the flexibility to call the general election at a time of his choosing, up until a date five years after parliament first met after the last general election.”

TW has just put you right on when that is.

Now stop it with your conspiracy theory nonsense.

Speaking of affronts to democracy, I see the ‘pro-free speech’ government of the USA are sanctioning bodies and people involved with highlighting disinformation. Apparently free speech does not include highlighting lies and free speech means shutting down those calling out lies.

Maybe the ‘totalitarian Marxist state’ is being brought in by Donald Trump?

There are still free and fair elections planned for the USA, so I wouldn’t describe him as a dictator. He certainly admires them though and I have no doubt that he would love to be one. He is acting like one, with the austentatious and tacky White House updates, grovelling of underlings and hatred of critical material of his government. They give a pretense of free speech concerns in Europe, but seem more bothered that Kremlin rubbish gets called out as disinformation and he is more than happy palling up to murderers of journalists from Saudi.
