Russ: got us promoted, got us a record undefeated run.
But what a damp squib promotion, where it really felt like we were trying not to lose, rather than to win🙁
AB: got us promoted last season, but we both could, and should, have been champions.
His naivety, stubbornness, and round peg in square hole tactics have cost us yet again.
Time to appoint an attacking manager, ex attacker?1 user thanked author for this post.
May 4, 2026 at 5:56 pm #320379Guess you mean Sharp, not for me he’s an inbred.
May 4, 2026 at 6:12 pm #320385He means “anybody but Butler”

May 4, 2026 at 6:19 pm #320387Maybe we should sign Vincent Kompany as manager, former centre back whose Bayern Munich team win nearly every game playing attacking football, however he has the right playing budget to help him out a bit. Give Butler a York Ciy budget and we will be promoted no problem.

May 4, 2026 at 6:19 pm #320388Butler isn’t going anywhere and it is absurd to be thinking of replacing him right now. He is not beyond criticism; he has a stubbornness, has a poor media presence and attitude to the latter third of the season was too carefree. However, regardless of what ifs and hindsight, he did get us promoted last season and got us into the playoffs this season, of which not many predicted.
People would take Butler critics more seriously if it wasn’t in the maximalist style of “he has to go”.

Not quite.
But an ex attacker as manager, yes.May 4, 2026 at 6:24 pm #320390Maybe we should sign Vincent Kompany as manager, former centre back whose Bayern Munich team win nearly every game playing attacking football, however he has the right playing budget to help him out a bit. I’m not sure you’re right.
He’s done the “sit on it, everyone behind the ball” too often for me, and often to our cost.May 4, 2026 at 6:25 pm #320391Butler isn’t going anywhere and it is absurd to be thinking of replacing him right now. Not so much, “he has to go” but “I wish he would”.
May 4, 2026 at 6:30 pm #320392Matin Carruthers then surely. Got his team to the playoffs.
May 4, 2026 at 7:07 pm #320395Don’t mind a Manager with attitude but if it goes wrong because they got ‘clever’ then accept comments.
We had another Manager who got clever and went 352 – it did not work and we ended up getting relegated, the ‘morons’ were proved right !

May 4, 2026 at 9:10 pm #320401Butler has done well and isn’t going anywhere. Got us promoted last season and I think literally every fan would have accepted a season of mid-table mediocrity without the threat of relegation. We definitely exceeded my expectations this season, especially considering the reduced budget compared to last.
However, his stubbornness, the way he comes across in interviews and his attitude towards any fan that isn’t of the Positivity Dave ilk makes him pretty unlikeable.

May 4, 2026 at 9:22 pm #320404Apart from Adkins, Robins, McCall and whatever the used car salesman played, we only appoint former defenders as managers…

May 5, 2026 at 1:45 pm #320426ifa most certainly not a Butler fan sadly is going know where until at least the mid point of 26-2027 season .. a low place in the table lets say flirting with relegation and even the demigod status he has now (esp on the sufc love fest fb page) may not save his arse.
Im predicting next season wont be as successful as this one as we will be up against the same bigger budget teams whilst Scunny more than likely operating with a weaker squad due to finances.
If there is a clear out and reset is AB the man to build a competitive side… jury still out even after relative success with what he was working with last 2 seasons. No fee for Roberts who will be leaving (bet my smaller and less beautiful right testicle on that) with earlier noises hes joining Oldham or Rochdale.
Looking forward to the retained list any clues when its being announced ?
May 5, 2026 at 2:07 pm #320427CMC. Adkins was a goalkeeper.
May 5, 2026 at 2:16 pm #320428Retained list this week said AB.
May 5, 2026 at 2:22 pm #320429Regarding Roberts, I’m hoping he’s kept in touch with Fitz. I know money is important, families to look after, but might he prefer the “big fish in small pool” future. Fitz went from the best NLN keeper in a promotion winning team to a bench warmer in a team relegated to league 2 and without the manager he wanted to sign for. Grass isn’t always greener and all that stuff!
Or maybe I’m just a naive dreamer?1 user thanked author for this post.
May 5, 2026 at 2:29 pm #320430I am sure Ross would be encouraging to Cal, given he fought his way into the team and became well liked by the Cobblers fans.
The rumours now for Cal are Notts County or Swindon.
May 5, 2026 at 2:52 pm #320431Grass might not be greener but the pay will be, and it’s a short career. Plus players can always step back down. Have to grab the opportunity to excel at a higher level when the chance comes.

May 5, 2026 at 2:56 pm #320432Our lower league defender got us as far as international super striker Mark Hughes and did better than hard-man midfielder Robbie Savage.
Position once played has sod all to do with it.

May 5, 2026 at 3:09 pm #320434But that’s my point. Fitz has failed to excel at a higher level, had he stayed he might well have had another outstanding year and had that opportunity in L2 with us next season.
(But he’d have been worse off financially of course)
Other factors to consider are family and location. I’ve no idea of Cal’s situation. Does he commute? Swindon would be a long hike and even Oldham & Notts would be extra mileage. Would he relocate? Would housing costs increase? Does he have kids settled at school? Does he have a wife/partner with a good job? Not always about the money for everybody.
(I hope he reads this, I’ve almost convinced myself that staying is the best option.)1 user thanked author for this post.
May 5, 2026 at 3:39 pm #320436I’m not sure he did underperform. From what I have read from Northampton fans, he’s been one of the few players they have seen as performing well for them.

May 5, 2026 at 4:34 pm #320441But still got benched in a team with the worst defensive record in the league. Can’t have been that good.

Really?
So the defenders mindset has no bearing?
