This 442 come 424 when in possession is much, much better than the one up top borefest. We seem to be revelling in this formation. Wide players are much more involved and more link up with the striker.
Who would have thought Denton would have worked out wide ?
Special mention to Carlton. Despite being rubbish for most of the season he’s really turned it on these last few months. If this is the real Carlton, it’s a shame he didn’t show up earlier. I can see now why we actually signed him.

May 4, 2025 at 7:23 am #303982More of a Tinmine!
Let’s not get too carried away with yesterday as the meat and gravy is next week.Played well in parts yesterday. Went pretty narrow when Roberts got crocked which wasn’t so good.

May 4, 2025 at 8:09 am #303983We did concede 2 soft goals.
However, we scored 4 and it could have been 8 or 10?
We’d all be happy with the same formula on the 18th.
The icing on the cake for me yesterday would have been if the long punt from well within his own half by Evans had gone in – it wasn’t that far off.May 4, 2025 at 8:40 am #303986It was Kelly wasn’t it?
May 4, 2025 at 8:57 am #303988Yes
May 4, 2025 at 10:08 am #303990Again.
May 4, 2025 at 11:16 am #303995It was Kelly wasn’t it?
My bad… as they say.
Wish that had gone in.May 4, 2025 at 12:55 pm #304002It was Kelly wasn’t it?
My bad… as they say.
Wish that had gone in.If Kelly notches the winner against Kidderminster ( providing they get there ) in the final with a similar effort going in, the sense of wonderful irony would be highly amusing.

May 5, 2025 at 5:33 am #304046Stumbled? This would have been.

May 5, 2025 at 10:50 am #304057If he wins promotion he’ll no doubt have ‘stumbled’ his way to it.
May 5, 2025 at 11:59 am #304061Correct Deerey.
May 5, 2025 at 2:44 pm #304067Nah, just your opinion.
May 5, 2025 at 2:58 pm #304068Well, Butler has had us go further in the playoffs than Jimmy and with a weaker squad.

May 5, 2025 at 3:42 pm #304071Yes but we must never forget that 5 at the back cost us HMS PTL by March.
May 5, 2025 at 3:58 pm #304073Why it has taken so long to sink in – for whatever reason for 442 has delivered more for us at home.
Just look at the spell when 352 0r 532 was inflicted on fans. This resulted in the playoffs.Stick to what works and don’t get clever with the game plan. Carlton arrived with a niggling injury and then a system that didn’t suit was used. Now the system fits the players – playing to strengths works.
Best for the final.

May 5, 2025 at 5:13 pm #304075I think the majority realise AB is a young manager in his first serious managerial role and has learned as the season has gone along. The point about getting us further than last season with a weaker squad is totally valid and I reckon AB has done alright after a bit of a rookie wobble during the campaign. Look how many wobbles Kiddy had under a very experienced manager.

May 5, 2025 at 5:34 pm #304077You offered up the “he’ll no doubt have ‘stumbled’ his way to it” Deerey.
If we do achieve promotion course we’ll have stumbled it, we tripped up with 5 games to go go then 3, then relying on the playoffs which in the main are a lottery.
So like i say your post was correct where’s your argument against.May 5, 2025 at 6:43 pm #304078The irony is in the word stumbled with inverted speech marks, I’m guessing DM was expressing that however we go up AB will be damned by some, in another words the guy will never win in some people’s eyes.
May 5, 2025 at 7:35 pm #304080More Minecraft than Goldmine perhaps?
May 5, 2025 at 10:09 pm #304083Butler’s done well, but let’s not forget the fact his mind blowing obsession with that 5 at the back garbage had basically cost us the league title.
Then we have the signing of Beck was terrible as he doesn’t even fit our style of play. I’m glad he’s learnt a thing or two, but blimey has he dropped some absolute clangers along the way.
How many points did we drop with Butlers obsession with 5 at the back ?.
I will however say he’s come good towards the end, especially with this latest formation change. Let’s not make out he’s some kind of tactical genius though.

May 6, 2025 at 6:38 am #304088The only obsession was on here for 4-4-2 ,which wasn’t the golden bullet when adopted .It worked a couple of times but you cant just make players better than they are by swapping them around all the time. Like anything else muscle memory and repetition creates instinct

The games we’ve lost or drawn cost us the league title – and not many of them, at that. Fine margins etc.
How many points did we drop when not playing five at the back?
May 6, 2025 at 9:02 am #304092One hell of a wobble Ironawe Sept 21st till Dec 26th obviously with the odd performance in there.
And all the time the happy clappers giving it we’re top of the league while the 7 point advantage was whittled away till we weren’t.May 6, 2025 at 9:05 am #304093May 6, 2025 at 10:25 am #304104Forget formations although I still am still wondering in what universe playing 5 defenders for half the season against 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 is a good idea.
5 at the back or 4 we never found a way to play away games against the teams you are expected to beat.
Brackley are worthy champions because they did the business in the games they were expected to. Only lost 1 away game against the bottom 12. Drew a couple but won 9 of them. We lost 4 of them.
They got 29 out of the 36 on offer which is kind of what champions do.
We got 22 which is kind of what champions don’t do. Kidderminster and Chester both managed more points than us in away games against the bottom 12 than us. Anyone that went to a few away games will know exactly what I mean. Cautious, tentative and lethargic are how I would describe many of our away performances this season.1 user thanked author for this post.

I’d never say we looked lazy, away from home. We tended to look either slightly shell-shocked from the off, for some reason, or like we were just aimlessly going through the motions.
