Bizarre team selection!!
Looks like 3-5-2 with Pat Jones & Smith as WBs.
2 LBs in the squad but neither playing 1st half.
Can’t believe Butler thinks this is even worth a trial.
Same as last season, trying WBs when he didn’t have any and hasn’t signed any.July 11, 2026 at 3:07 pm #322987Interesting start:-
” Early chance for the Iron as Brennan is released down the right, forcing a crucial interception to clear the his low cross.”Brennan not in the starting XI
July 11, 2026 at 3:59 pm #322988The number 5 should never be in any formation Scunthorpe United plays.
It is negative.

July 11, 2026 at 6:08 pm #322995Agree with all the above. 5 at the back first half looked clueless.
Butterfield and Jones tried hard to create something. Rest of the didn’t seem to know what position they were playing. A (very slightly) better team than App Frod would have punished us first half. I’m not a professional coach of course but is playing 3 centre backs without a left footer amongst them ever a good idea?
Especially when you play a right footed right back as your left sided man.Must be saving our left sided centre backs for the second half. Oh no Evans and Barrows right footed as well. Oh shit we don’t have a left sided centre back at the club. We had best keep pretending left back Horton is a centre back then.
Bit better second half with the players at least looking like they knew where to be. Zero chances for Frod. Richards and Beestin pretty decent. Rest OK.
Rose off injured again (groin) which is a concern.
Won’t be bothering with the 5 hour round trips for the next 3 friendlies.

July 11, 2026 at 6:21 pm #322999Shouldn’t moan. They beat us last year.

July 11, 2026 at 7:00 pm #323004Friendlies are all about increasing match fitness and trying out different players in different systems, the fact we are two wins from two is a bonus but fans should be moaning about nowt in these games, when the season starts and we are ten games in then we can all start reflecting on how things are going but these games mean nowt apart from the points raised earlier, avoiding injuries is also a priority.

July 11, 2026 at 7:11 pm #323007Does anyone really have confidence in Butler to be able to get this mish mash of new and old players to gel into some sort of decent consistently winning team ? ,, not sure even after the friendlies he will even know his best formation and the correct players to play in their best natural positions .. these are his signings and it will either be hero or zero .. we will have a fair idea after August is done but for me the jury is still out but IMO i dont think Butler has the nowse to do it.

July 12, 2026 at 9:29 am #323021to save time many on here could re-post their moans re friendlies from last season.
We were doomed after a the results/performances we had last year. Iron Awe is spot on.
Lets see points total after 10 games – any thing over 18 will be decent2 users thanked author for this post.

In your “not-so-humble opinion”?
Based on what?July 12, 2026 at 8:30 pm #323033I can certainly re-post mine. You can’t play a back 3/5 with no WBs. He didn’t have any at the start of last season and eventually realised that. Having had the opportunity during the summer to sign WBs he didn’t, so is, once again , trying a system that can’t work because he doesn’t have the right players.

Round pegs in round holes.Nail on head there Cass … players need to be in their natural positions not forced into a place to suit Butlers dream setup .. it didnt work last time and it wont again this IF he decides to try it.
