An honest look at the Iron’s poor start!

Six games is far too early to write off a season or demand that Andy Butler is sacked. His achievements; promotion followed by a fifth-place National League finish—have earned him time. However, four points, four defeats and no clean sheets cannot simply be blamed on difficult fixtures.

The most concerning statistic is that we have conceded first in every league game which points to a structural problem rather than bad luck.

The squad looks unbalanced. We lost Callum Roberts’ 32 goal contributions and Oli Ewing’s energy from midfield. We signed several good footballers, but it does not feel as though we replaced the qualities they provided.

We now have plenty of experience, technical ability and physical forwards, but appear short of three crucial things:

1. A mobile defensive midfielder who protects the back three and wins second balls.
2. A quick centre-half capable of defending space behind the defensive line.
3. A genuinely explosive attacker who frightens defenders and replaces some of Roberts’ goals and creativity.

The midfield is particularly concerning. Jacob Butterfield remains an excellent passer and set-piece taker, but at 36 he needs athletic players around him. Asking him to cover large areas in an exposed midfield is neither fair nor effective. Opponents are repeatedly finding space in front of our defence, while direct balls are exposing a back line that lacks recovery pace.

There is also too much uncertainty. We have already changed formation, defensive combinations, wing-backs, midfield units and strike partnerships. Some of that is injury-related, but the players currently look like they are thinking about the system instead of playing instinctively.

Then there is the question of sentimentality.

Our connection with former players and people who understand the club has helped rebuild Scunthorpe United. Butler, Schofield and Musselwhite have genuine history here, while Butterfield, Ogle and Callum Howe are returning players. That connection creates loyalty and togetherness.

But familiarity cannot become a recruitment strategy.

Each returning player may be a perfectly reasonable signing individually. Collectively, however, have we placed too much value on character, previous relationships and “knowing the club,” and not enough on pace, athleticism and addressing specific weaknesses?

That does not mean Butler should go, it does however, means he now needs to be decisive.

I would settle on one formation, establish a core of eight regular starters and make the team much more compact. Butterfield should be protected by two energetic midfielders, only one wing-back should attack at a time, and the high defensive line should be abandoned unless we can pressure the ball properly.

Recruitment should now focus on a proper defensive midfielder and a quick centre-half—not simply another familiar name or general squad option.

Butler deserves the opportunity to turn this around, but his status as a club legend and promotion-winning manager cannot make him immune from scrutiny. Sentiment should earn goodwill not lower standards.

The season is completely recoverable, but this looks like more than a slow start. The squad lacks balance, the defence lacks protection and the management team currently appears unsure of its strongest system.

Is this as a temporary loss of confidence, or have we built a squad of individually good players that simply does not fit together?

It’s carried on from the back end of last season, recruiting for an unbalanced side with average players, a seemingly lack lustre pre-season with tired befuddled interviews, desperate wholesale changes as soon as we concede, etc. Clichéd, but has Butler ‘lost the dressing room’?

Sentimentality that’ll be Muzzie’s 16 managers in that believe he’s the right man for the job!

And that leads on to, ‘we appear to be short of three crucial things’ you’ve missed the most important position the goalkeeper.
We’ve all known including Butler 18 months ago Fitz was leaving, and all we’ve brought in is an ex Scunny, a young lad from Leeds and the incumbent who Butler gave his debut to at Donny, 2 of which were loans, we’ve being crying out for a goalie all that is except Butler.
