Disclaimer: I have never bought a replica kit and am unlikely to ever do so. Also it’s about 50 years since any accusations of being a fashion victim have headed my way.
However, assuming that was the home kit on show at Brigg last night at first glance I thought “So we’re starting the friendlies in washed out training tops again”.
After a couple of minutes realised they had numbers on the back and an unhealthy number of clashing logos. Forget style for a moment (which is generally mutually exclusive with all but about 5% of football kits) I mentally congratulated the club and supplier on getting a kit onto the players backs for the first time in a don’t know how long by the first friendly. (Awaywego can probably be more exact on that one).
After about 10 minutes I stopped noticing it – understandable as there was a bit of football to focus on.
Half time I reflected my main gripe is the same as my main gripe last year. If you are going to have a swathes of claret on the kit does it have to be such a washed out shade? Make it vibrant which would also help tone down the inevitable clashes with our sponsors logos. Don’t recall Villa, Burnley or West Ham ever going with a half arsed shade of claret.
Anyway by middle of the second half it had obviously melted into my consciousness and I found myself thinking “It’s not so bad and certainly better than last seasons shocking effort”.
