Horton’s option was appearance-based and was triggered earlier in the season: https://x.com/HumbersideSport/status/2029874648788140444

Ewing said something along the lines of his option having a few criteria that needs to be met: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0lwd6f2

At least the Horton option gives the impression that somebody at the club understands how options are meant to work.

In the case of the Ewing one, an option that needs to be agreed by both parties might as well not exist. As Ewing himself said in that interview, “it’s effectively a one year contract”, which indeed it turned out to be.

For him to have stayed any longer, another contract was always going to be needed, except in the highly unlikely event that Ewing felt he was lucky to have the existing one and wanted to keep the same terms.

I’d genuinely welcome any explanation as to the purpose of the option that the club activated, given it had no validity unless Ewing inexplicably neglected to reject it in favour of negotiating new terms either here or elsewhere. Any ideas?
