It’s clear many want to control immigration. However, the 2016 referendum has no bearing on our immigration policy, besides obligations of freedom of movement from EU nations. If you want to argue for this, and make claims of public desire, I don’t think it’s wise to use a referendum which wasn’t a referendum specifically on immigration policy. We cannot use a referendum on EU membership to justify whatever we want.
