Tyrell Sellars-Fleming admits Scunthorpe exit was ‘tug-of-war’

Hull City forward Tyrell Sellars-Fleming admits leaving Scunthorpe United was a “tough decision” after stepping up to the EFL with Grimsby Town.

The 20-year-old, who came through the academy ranks at Glanford Park, has joined the Mariners on loan for the remainder of the season following a productive spell in the National League with the Iron.

While the move to Blundell Park offers the chance to play League Two football, Sellars-Fleming says the decision to cut short his time at Scunthorpe was difficult.

“It was a tough decision. In one mind I wanted to stay, and in another, I wanted to go and test myself and play higher,” he told BBC Radio Humberside.

“My mind was always changing.”

Sellars-Fleming, who is the son of former Grimsby midfielder Terry Fleming, scored five goals in 14 league appearances for the Iron.

“I really enjoyed my time there. It was good for my development,” he added.

‘Hull wanted me to push myself’

The decision to switch loan clubs was ultimately driven by a desire from his parent club to see him tested at a higher level.

After consulting with his family and representatives, the versatile forward—who can operate across the front three—agreed the time was right to make the step up.

“I got advice from Hull, my agent, and my family,” he explained.

“Hull had a little bit to play in it; they wanted me to go and push myself.”

Sellars-Fleming featured predominantly on the left wing during his stint with Scunthorpe but is hopeful of offering Grimsby boss David Artell flexibility in attack as the Mariners look to climb the table.
