National League promotion chasers Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United are set to battle it out for the signature of Huddersfield Town prospect Jay Smith-Sway, according to reports.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed that the 18-year-old defender has emerged as a loan target for both clubs as they look to bolster their squads for the second half of the campaign.
Smith-Sway, predominantly a right-back who is also comfortable operating in central midfield, has caught the eye of scouts with a string of mature performances in cup competitions this season.
Despite his age, the teenager has been a bright spark for Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup and EFL Trophy. He has drawn praise for his versatility and composure on the ball, traits that have seemingly convinced Terriers’ management that he is ready for regular senior football.
While first-team opportunities in the league have been limited at the John Smith’s Stadium, his displays in the cups suggest he is capable of making the step up to be a key figure in the National League.
According to O’Rourke, both Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United have identified Smith-Sway as an ideal addition.
With the January window open, a decision on Smith-Sway’s immediate future is expected soon. For Huddersfield, the priority will be finding the destination that guarantees the most playing time.
For Smith-Sway, a loan move represents the next logical step in his development, offering the chance to translate his cup form into consistent league performances.
