Bug you to get a smart meter, when you respond and try book one they have no appointments. Also cannot have an EV tariff without one.I feel scammed
January 14, 2026 at 9:29 pm #315315Smart meter, pah. British Gas fitted us one in August 2024, it didn’t work. They replaced it in October 2024, it doesn’t, and never did, work. I’ll try again when the £50 mandatory rebate kicks in later this year for non-working smart meters.
January 14, 2026 at 10:06 pm #315316Been offered endless smart meters, always said no after what I have heard about them from different people. We take our own meter readings every month and send them in to Octopus online, we could leave it for three months if we wished but we like to keep on top of our energy bills. You can keep not so smart meters for me, heard too many bad stories about them.
January 14, 2026 at 10:55 pm #315317Not really tempted by a smart meter. I’ve seen people with them obsessing about how much gas and electric they’re using / how much money they’re spending and I’d probably end up doing the same. Try to use as little energy as possible whilst staying comfortable and not letting the house temp drop too low. That’ll do for me.
January 15, 2026 at 7:31 am #315320I need on to be able to get an EV tariff for cheaper overnight electricity ,they say you need one yet can’t offer you one, Tory privatization in action. Scam the customer with no recourse
January 15, 2026 at 11:11 am #315327Scottish Power offer us a smart meter every few months, almost implying it’s a necessity. Never bothered to pursue it though.
January 15, 2026 at 1:00 pm #315331same here but they cannot fit it
January 15, 2026 at 1:24 pm #315335This line they all seem to spin that a smart meter can save you money, don’t get it myself if it’s cold we put the heating on if it’s warm we don’t have it on, having a smart meter would not change our lifestyle choices.
January 15, 2026 at 1:43 pm #315338That’s what I’ve alluded to. I can understand it being useful for those that have a more limited or restricted household budget / income, but thankfully not in that place (at present!).
That said our leccy costs seem incredibly high!
January 16, 2026 at 10:48 am #315361I’ve got a smart meter (not!) It’s called O Level Maths!
I can read a set of numbers and multiply them by the unit price.
Simples!
January 16, 2026 at 3:43 pm #315365Simples indeed NI, maybe our generation had a more rounded education after all, no iPads or smartphones back then for us thickos.
January 18, 2026 at 9:35 am #315463How simples is it to access your meters? In our case, not very. Not that I want a smart meter mind.
January 18, 2026 at 11:10 am #315468We had to have the smart meter as part of the reduced tariff(steady Donald) I switched to. I’ve never even plugged in the separate meter they give you to track your usage, as we have a very well insulated house and use energy as and when needed. As they’ve now provided two smart meters that don’t work I look forward to my free fifty quid later this year that they’re obliged to cough up, along with the £25 and £20 I’ve already had for switching tariffs in the last year, c/o Martin Lewis.
January 23, 2026 at 10:04 am #315601I emailed the local MP to point out the ridiculous situation of Energy companies having to offer meters but no compulsion to actually fit one if needed.Git an automated reply and no other response ,it’s been a week
January 23, 2026 at 10:54 am #315602Git indeed.
January 23, 2026 at 3:03 pm #315610If you lived bottom of Ashby you could email Max Bell to help :)
