Butler’s getting married soon (I think it might be this coming weekend, or the weekend after), so you’d reasonably expect he’ll be away for a couple of weeks on honeymoon. We might not see any action for a while, re player negotiations…
May 27, 2025 at 8:59 am #305100Not usually the manager that does contract negotiations though is it? He’s told the club who he wants to keep so it’s up to them now, best of luck.

During his open-top bus tour interview with Ollie Turner, Danny Whitehall alluded to on field position and style of play sometimes being a factor in negotiations. So what if some sort of scenario arose where a player was offered something but didn’t want to accept due to those things? Yes, no doubt it’ll be down to Ian and George to sort the money and terms side of the contracts, but you’d expect Butler’s input as part of the bigger picture.
May 27, 2025 at 9:37 am #305103So a player might only sign if he can play in a position or certain way that suits him? Sounds like he’d better piss off then, manager runs the team his way, he probably asks for input from players about their thoughts sometimes but the player plays and does what he’s asked to do by the manager in a game.
May 27, 2025 at 9:46 am #305104Keep up Rene your only ten and a half hours too late mate, lol.
A technical glitch at my end.
I think my internet was stuck in a time lock – it was leading me to believe the announcement had just being made.
Not sure why it was playing up but it seems to have self resolved now.May 27, 2025 at 9:48 am #305105So a player might only sign if he can play in a position or certain way that suits him? If you’re a 5’8″ goalpoacher and your Club offers you a contract and then plays you as a target man for long balls all season you’d want to have known in advance wouldn’t you? Alright, that’s an extreme example, but I’m sure you take the point?
May 27, 2025 at 10:17 am #305106A very valid point. We saw how few goals came from Danny Elliott when he was used as a lone striker. A more recent example – see Mark Beck.

May 27, 2025 at 10:29 am #305107I’d say the point about position and style of play is about expectations, too. “We expect 20 goals out of you, and if you get them you achieve your bonus” (which, in financial terms, for some players could be the factor that swings the decision)… Yet the Club intends to play a system that is likely to put you out of your natural position…
May 27, 2025 at 11:25 am #305113When S*earer signed for Newcastle part of his demands were that he got the No.9 shirt, was made captain and took all the penalties.
Much to the amusement of Les Ferdinand who happily took the No.10.

May 27, 2025 at 11:28 am #305114There you go then. These things are important in contract negotiations. It’s not just about what your annual wage is, even at our level.
May 27, 2025 at 12:16 pm #305117Its only cos it was referring to Whitehall, Apollo.
Still plenty don’t like him.
Believe the same person objected to Alexander leaving Townsend out of the team for his bad discipline, so that’s the only point I’ll go along with is a player should do has he’s asked.
May 27, 2025 at 1:44 pm #305121As regards negotiations Michelle did say that Mr Butler has his budget and he is in control – the only time she would get involved is when AB and player have agreed the terms and then she will check it and sign if acceptable.
Players do need to know what their role would be. No point having players who excite crowds if the manager intends boring opponents to death with tippy tappy rubbish.

May 28, 2025 at 10:33 am #305173Interview with Steve Torpey on Radio Humberside discussing the retained list so far, and his thoughts on it. Of those listed as having been offered contracts, he expects some to go though he didn’t say who. What are everyone on here’s instincts about that party of the retained list? Who do you think will stay, and who do you think will go?
May 28, 2025 at 10:47 am #305174Anyone’s guess really. I remain hopeful that the better players will get respectable offers and stay, especially given that Evans and Scales have both already signed new contracts this season under the new regime.
The only ones I’d actually be disappointed with if they left are Clunan, Fitz, Maxi, Roberts and Whitehall.
May 28, 2025 at 10:50 am #305175From that group – I think very few will leave but I suspect that any leftover from the previous chairman may have to take a a significant cut. Mind you, salary isn’t everything. Some may welcome the challenge of the NL.

Not just that. Again, fairly recently Michelle said something about some players have families and prefer the security of longer contracts even if it will mean slightly less in wages – so that may work in our favour (Clunan and Whitehall).
May 28, 2025 at 11:15 am #305178I’m pretty sure that Michelle has also stated that we will now only be offering out 1 year deals??
May 28, 2025 at 11:31 am #305179I’m pretty sure that Michelle has also stated that we will now only be offering out 1 year deals??
I’ve not heard that in any of the interviews I’ve listened to.
May 28, 2025 at 12:31 pm #305181I’m pretty sure that Michelle has also stated that we will now only be offering out 1 year deals??
Needs to be 1 year plus a years option at least. I doubt if we’ll attract much quality with 1 year only deals. Valid points above re wages versus length of contract for players.
May 28, 2025 at 1:42 pm #305182My guesses from the list are : Ross Barrows, Alfie Beestin, Michael Kelly, Joe Starbuck and Andrew Boyce will stay.
Michael Clunan, I think will stay – he gave up part time to join us and at his age I think he’s doing it more for his football career than money and I think he’ll want to play in the NL.
Ross Fitzsimons, seem to be enough rumours that he will be going elsewhere.
Maxim Kouogun, I’m not sure, it wouldn’t surprise me if he got a better offer elsewhere.
Callum Roberts, and Danny Whitehall – I don’t think we’ll be matching Hilton’s fantasy contract levels with them. I really hope they stay but my guess is they will go.
May 28, 2025 at 3:18 pm #305183I believe we may be in for a surprise with both Roberts and Whitehall. Neither gave any impression over the past 10 days that they were looking to get away. Their demeaner to me showed commitment to the club…time will tell
May 28, 2025 at 3:30 pm #305186You’d like to think being fan favourites and almost guaranteed starters would help sway their decisions. But they’re professionals with a short career and will probably follow the money (which I don’t blame them for…it’s what most likely brought them here in the first place!).
May 28, 2025 at 5:19 pm #305188‘Michael Clunan, I think will stay – he gave up part time to join us and at his age I think he’s doing it more for his football career than money and I think he’ll want to play in the NL.’
I’m sure he’ll be able to point the Board in the right direction towards his demands :)
In all seriousness though, I think that makes sense. May aswell give as much time up to pro football while it lasts. Can’t see him getting that many offers to test himself in the NL and he’s got his other career to fall back on later anyway.
May 28, 2025 at 7:03 pm #305192Surprised with the amount of contracts offered, wonder if sentiment played a part with a few of them.
However, what we end up with in a couple
Of weeks could look vastly different,
; I suspect- maybe wrongly- that our budget will be at its lowest level since pre Swann 12 years ago. -
