The old timers must have being having kittens when Clemence was thrown in at the deep end? I bet their typewriters were clacking like a Gatling Gun reeling their letters of angst off to the ST.

<em class=”d4pbbc-italic”>Ray Clemence was 17 years old when he made his Football League debut for Scunthorpe United. He signed for the club on his 17th birthday, August 5, 1965, and his debut came in April 1966

I bet Notts County were Sick as a Parrot after having discarded him from their Youths!

Lincoln City gave a trial to an Irish Lad once. Manager didn’t sign him, said to him the defenders in the division would break him in half ! George Best went on to better things.

Butler & Schofield would be fuming about their equaliser.
    Absolute shambles defensively!

    1. CR10 didn’t mark / track / pick their thrower of the ball up. When the thrower received the ball back, he had all the space & time in the world to deliver the cross.

    2. Their no11 was completely unmarked at the throw. JR Ewing was 10 yards off of him.

    3. Four of our outfield players looking after one one of their players at the near post.

    4. One of our outfield players watching three of their players at the back post.

    5. One of our smaller players swamped by their 3 much taller players – match up like for like?

    6. Evans is in no-mans land when the ball is delivered. Why on earth is he there?

    7. Benehoun, no challenge / half challenge or ‘disruption’ to their player who received the ball from the thrower. Too easy!

    8. Their receiving player is able to return the ball to the thrower so, so easily.

    9. Benehoun then chases the lay off back to the initial player who threw the ball in. However, he jumps and turns his back as the ball is struck. Scared?

    10. Don’t turn your back / side. Stand up, be big & brave.

    11. Turn your back and a good player will make you look a complete donkey.

    12. Good delivery by them.

    13. Unbelievable ‘non-defending’ by us.

    14. Perhaps Maison’s starting position should have been central on the goal line?

Case for the defence rests your honour.
    Not guilty!

    10. Was meant to say jump and turn your back / side. Apologies for my error.

George Best went straight from Belfast to Manchester United aged fifteen. There’s no evidence he went anywhere near Lincoln City.

I probably only came up with around half of your list, Rene, but didn’t bother to organise my thinking.
A splendid and pretty accurate analysis.
    Rockets up rectums required?
Hopefully, the blue touch paper ignition will only be needed during pre-season games.

TBF Butler did say that they had done no defensive work yet. Having said that, professional footballers, at any level, only need to look around to see that 4 on 1 near post and 1 on 3 back post needs adjustment.

It has to be said, the video doesn’t show any “flapping” . For their goal. Other than being psychic and standing at the back post I can’t see what he did wrong there.I am sure Burney will explain now we have actual video and not a twitter post as evidence

The defensive work was shocking, but Campbell went walk about, got caught of position and left a huge portion of his goal with no GK covering it.

How was that good play ?

He’s been garbage so far, as have some of the defenders, but they do get a slight pass as Butler has stated they haven’t done any of his magical defensive work in training yet.

Definitely caught in no mans land, positionally awful. One of those keepers that looks to be scared of the ball.

Overall defence was shocking for that goal though, not just Campbell’s fault.

Little bit like the Chorley equaliser in the playoff semi final, some people said Fitz was out of position and the back post was a free area for an easy header, so we have seen it before from a promotion winning team and the best goalkeeper in NLN last season.

From the short clip, Maison’s handling & distribution looked fine.

The back four look as solid as jelly in a Turkish steam room!

We need a competent hard tackling / biting, nasty holding midfielder.

Don’t worry about Maison – the mob in front are my worry. The back four were horrendous in the short video.

    Dubem looks promising.

Beck looked to keep things simple. Nice lay off for our first goal.

We’ll get a better idea when AB plays his first X1 towards the end of pre-season.

The staff are going to have a busy week or two trying to cobble a half decent back four together.

Whilst i am reasonably happy with the front line and attacking element of the current pick n mix bunch i worry about us defensively and if not addressed could see us getting a few goals against. So lets be prepared for a few 3=2 4-3 4-4 5-4 etc etc.

Hoping AB gets an experienced keeper (shame about Eastwood) another Central defender and a nasty hard as nails midfielder SOON

Offensively we look to have potential and options.
Defensively we look as solid as a sandcastle on the bank of the River Severn with the Bore fast approaching.

Campbell could have positioned himself better, but there were several unmarked players. Regardless of whether Campbell called for them, the defenders should have known to mark players. When there is a collective error, it’s unfair to single out one player for special criticism.

I am not impressed by our goalkeeping situation, but I am less impressed by some eager to stick the boot in for any goal conceded. Many are berating Watson for the goal, with more sensible fans saying he wasn’t at fault. Criticism is fine, but it has to be warranted and constructive. Hysteria at any goal isn’t and makes it look like a witch hunt, even if such people say it’s not.

One way to get the fans behind the goalkeeper is to make the alternative unimaginably worse I suppose.

I think we should all chant Campbell in unison as a show of solidarity. Watson doesn’t need as he’s now an experienced campaigner. Watson and Campbell tearing it up, we’ll be watertight

    Come on, Iron !

“Get behind your keeper” – Deereyme66

Get organised, solid & sorted in front of your keeper.

We know it’s pre-season, muggy and there’s a lack of intensity in these fixtures but:

Our ‘defending’ for their goal was shocking once again.
Slack marking / too far off.
    No closing down.
They are allowed to make easy passes in the build up.
The crosser is in acres of space, he’s not closed down.
Comedy Central when the ball comes in.
How does Shipstone get in that position (facing his own goal)
He’s nowhere near the player behind him.
If he’d being in the correct positional ‘stance’ he’d have seen the flight of the ball and you’d think would have being able to deal with it.
We seem to be a mess at the back.

A solid, dependable keeper who commands their area breeds confidence in the defenders in front of him.

Honestly can’t believe that the two we have are the best available to us, we really must have zero pence in the bank. Today was the first time I’ve ever reacted to a Scunny signing by genuinely holding my head in my hands with disbelief .

Much as I’m a fan of Whitehall and Roberts I’d rather we’d let one of them go to get a experienced keeper.
Unless we’re just gonna go out with the notion we’re gonna score one more than you, but that ain’t gonna happen with Butler in charge.

Long hard season incoming .. i agree AWG for me AB isnt the right man to form a team to compete in the NLb To hit n miss and really is Rory Watson the best we can do . CRAP

We keep on about the goalkeeper being not good enough. After yesterday’s performance, what about the 10 headless chickens that are playing in front of him. No cohesion in midfield at all. Beck is about as useful as tits on bulls.

So perhaps instead of getting behind our keeper we should all stand in front of him?
