Social media abuse in football
Scunthorpe UNITED!
July 16, 2025 at 3:46 am #306954Let’s hope that people within the club are keeping a very close eye on the young man
People Are People… Depeche Mode.
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully? So we’re different colours and we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me, though I’ve done nothing wrong
I’ve never even met you, so what could I have done?I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understandPeople are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?(Help me understand)
(Help me understand, help me understand)Now you’re punching and you’re kicking and you’re shouting at me
I’m relying on your common decency
So far it hasn’t surfaced, but I’m sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel from your head to your fistsI can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understandPeople are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?

Hate another man

(Why should it be?)

July 16, 2025 at 7:13 am #306965This ducking stool mentality reminds of the 4-4-2 situation ,online people will get so wound up it will effect the atmosphere at GP, I genuinely hate the way our fans are now and for that matter many of our fans .
They seem to think that because someone is in football they have to accept dogs abuse, pretending that their contorted faces and screaming is constructive and they have a right because they paid £20 . This Keeper will have a bad season in their eyes, one mistake in a an over all good game will see them seething and foaming at the mouth even if we win. They’ll ignore the bad back pass or misplaced header from a centre and claim he “flapped”. It’s happening in pre season already .
As for this inexperienced nonsense, if these people got their way there would be no experienced players as you can’t play young ones . Players gain experience ,they aren’t just sat on a shelf marked experienced players.3 users thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2025 at 8:02 am #306968Having said all that when young inexperienced keeper gets that nod of approval he must grasp it with both hands (awful pun) especially against such lower league opposition.
The one things for certain all these fluff’s shall we say will make him or break him I really hope it makes him, twould great for himself and the club.
I hope he’s coping with the undoubted pressure and enjoys himself.July 16, 2025 at 8:06 am #306969Unfortunately Keepers are the scapegoats.
It’s a massive confidence position as one mistake can mean you lose a match. Nobody ever remembers the one or two fine saves to keep you in a game.
I was chatting to Paul Robinson a few years back. One bad back pass from Gary Neville which took an awful kick up off the turf and he was made the villain. An outfield player makes a mistake and it’s all forgotten about within seconds.
Nobody has experience anymore in many workplaces because they don’t get the chance to show their worth.

July 16, 2025 at 8:57 am #306971Most ridiculous reaction on social media last night was the claim of cover up on SUFC X regarding Alfreton’s goal. Were Alfreton in on the conspiracy too?:
‘Trialist gets his second goal of pre season as he brings us level with a header from a left wing cross! YES!’

July 16, 2025 at 9:14 am #306973I made similar points to you Roaming Bull on another thread on this theme and was told I talked nonsense by one of the anti Campbell brigade. They clearly had not read or absorbed the points I made before rushing in to spread more negativity, they can’t help themselves. I fear young Campbell could be in for a rough ride if these people turn their social media attitudes into live vocal vitriol on match days, I wish the young man well this season and the fanbase should unite and get behind him and just give him a chance.

July 16, 2025 at 10:04 am #306976You know how the inexperienced gain experience don’t you?
Getting thrown in at the deep end!
Yep, that’s how I remember learning to swim in the small pool at Scunny Baths all those years ago.
July 16, 2025 at 10:12 am #306977I understand and appreciate the concern. It’s the reaction that’s unfair on the lad and stifling his growth that I question.

July 16, 2025 at 12:02 pm #306985Suppose that’s another negative about playing at piddle grounds, even though only 3-4 hundred at cleggy, the one mans voice shouting at Butler to get another keeper was heard by everyone.
Same at Buxton (Farsley game) Beck misses that sitter and there was an audible groan, it was very funny mind.
Your never going to stop reactions to incidents though, the clanger at cleggy almost everyone reacted in some audible form.
And everyone has a different solution to events, mine was and still is we need someone better behind the sticks at this moment in time reentering the NL, halfway through the season not pushing for promotion or relegation then give a rookie a good run imo.
Other opinions also available lol.July 16, 2025 at 12:26 pm #306994It’s Catch 22 (no pun intended).
You need an experienced keeper, but you haven’t got the time to wait while he gains that experience.
Option 1. Stick with him and hope he learns quickly.
Option 2. Restrict his learning to training sessions and cup games.
Option 3. Ship him out on loan to get experience and bring in an oven-ready replacement. If one is available and within budget.
Or?.

July 16, 2025 at 12:45 pm #306997Don’t think option 3 cuts the mustard anymore, with us only been a NL side.
Looks like option 1 and will be well happy if it works out, he wins the club wins in turn we all win.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2025 at 12:53 pm #306998The problem with option 1 (not a problem for me) is a vocal online majority are adamant he shouldn’t be given the time. Some are going as far as insulting the lad, and using it as an excuse to hit Butler with.

…and there is the problem, areseholes are areseholes and no amount of rational reasoning with them will change who they are or how they act, it’s not what a young keeper or the manager needs from, l believe they are called supporters.

Someone should tell them not to put the Alfreton goal in the match highlights on youtube given they apparently want to cover it up.
July 16, 2025 at 1:29 pm #307006I was disappointed not to see any flaps.
July 16, 2025 at 2:51 pm #307009Ironically, we’re at the level Clubs send players to get “experience” for him to get experience .It’s a division of players being loaned to clubs for experience. We need to realise our station now. I checked out Fits experience before us, woeful amount of appearances over a long time in the game. several clubs no league appearances

July 16, 2025 at 4:48 pm #307016Your talking there Ironawe as though you don’t think your an arsehole yourself ffs.
Says the man who doesn’t go to games and then proceeds to tell us at times a draw was a good result, amongst many other duff comments, of posters I know they have questioned who the f are you do I know you personally and what planet are you on at times.
Will you change your rational or reasoning you entitled t**t.1 user thanked author for this post.
July 16, 2025 at 5:17 pm #307019Despite the many deflections and distractions in the thread the current goalkeeper situation is unacceptable.
I am all for young talent being blooded and thrust in and when a young talented goalkeeper arrives I will support him.
Until then experienced goalkeeper required.

July 16, 2025 at 5:26 pm #307020Like Fitz? Spent quite a bit of his career getting zero league appearances at clubs ,we make up over a 3rd in his short time with us.He was not very good yet you claim he’s one of our best ever

July 16, 2025 at 6:07 pm #307028Of course you’re entitled to your opinion of Fitzsimons, but you’re wrong. For comfirmation please see NLN team of the season.

July 16, 2025 at 6:11 pm #307030You’re the only Iron fan that as had a bad word to say about him.
Football is about opinions mine align with a majority of Iron fans on Ross Fitzsimmons.
He was excellent. As were Joe Murphy, Joe Neenan and Muzzy in his second spell. Sam Slocombe and Luke Daniels too Those keepers as with Fitzsimmons played in teams which won things.
Glenn Letheran was very good also but played in a poor team.

So do you think we could realistically attract one or more to the point afford one?
Any names?
July 16, 2025 at 6:26 pm #307032Alas I don’t have any names, but track keepers mentioned on here some have made only 150 appearances and are aged 29 on average. They have however been capped at international level Wales, Eire etc.
Our neighbours released two (no I don’t want either) and signed Pym from Mansfield who on paper looks a good signing.
I do however watch a lot of football and have seen a lot better keepers than our one at NPL and NCEL levels.
That’s why the situation worries me. There were a few keepers at NLN level who impressed against us.
July 16, 2025 at 6:55 pm #307033I’m not worried,I don’t believe he’s a bad ,his problem will be if it becomes toxic like it did with 4-4-2.Iron fans have become extremely aggressive in nature online and GP reflected that last season. One bloke I saw was actually foaming at the mouth abusing Butler while we were top of the league.
July 16, 2025 at 7:39 pm #307034Of course you’re entitled to your opinion of Fitzsimons, but you’re wrong. For comfirmation please see NLN team of the season.
which bit, the one where his stats show he had several clubs that didn’t play him in any league games?
As for being the the only fan that doesn’t think
Fits was amazing , I’d suggest you get out of your bubble, I know several who agree with me and plenty disagree with me .
He’s not brilliant or bad, just a keeper and he made mistakes , quite a lot especially in distribution Basically a NLN level keeper .His experience is overplayed when you see his 1st team playing time stats over the years -
