Over the last 2 seasons I have often left Iron games thinking I have seen evidence of a game plan to stop the opposition but very little evidence of a game plan on how we are going to score. This surely cannot be true but just calling it as I see it in lots of games including many that we have managed to win.
The game plan to create chances and score has seemed to be get the ball any old how to Roberts, Whitehall and occasionally Beestin and they will come up with something. No coincidence that Roberts and Whitehall have been pretty much excluded from most defensive responsibilities and that Beestin is not always consistent with his. Probably why Beestin was never first choice in midfields full of less skillful and creative players and why when he does start he is usually first for the hook.
With an exceptional talent for the level like Roberts you can get away with this until you play the likes of Rochdale and York who in the main will deal with such limited threats.
Probably why despite being a top side in our respective leagues for 2 seasons you can count on one hand the times we have had really comfortable wins. You can of course win comfortably in different ways. York did it mainly by scoring for fun and Rochdale did it by demonstrating one goal is probably enough and two goals almost certainly is.
I guess the point I’m trying to make here is that if you have a player that scores or assists almost every game you can play with the handbrake on to protect suspect goalkeepers and defenders and be pretty successful.
Without that you might need to do things a bit differently.
