I’ve used it so not entirely innocent myself but I find AI generated pics hugely less funny although often better executed than the old pics we used to get on here.
Those old pictures that you mention… There’s something quite heroic and hilarious about the effort and the waste of time required for a knobhead to quickly knock something stupid together, and something inspired about how it can look daft or surreal and contain loads of wit.
It’s not just images. If you remember those old fanzines Get A Grip Ref and Son Of A Ref from years ago, they had a sort of DIY punk / analogue ethic and were an infinite number of miles better than the ‘competent fan content’ churned out by Iron Hour, Iron Army etc these days (genuinely not slagging these off, by the way, just making an observation that they’re a digital ethic, more tech-savvy and media-savvy, and therefore more generic and quite a bit less exciting for it).
Tech (and AI) makes everyone seem better than they are at stuff, but it also reduces everything to a bit of a porridge.
