The squad is threadbare of quality & quantity and 4-4-2 is simpler & better suited to the personnel.
4/4/2 isn’t suited at all. Law who’s a legitimate winger is injured which leaves Roberts as the only out and out winger. Carlton plays wide but wide of a front 3, so I’d argue 4/3/3 is more suited, but Butler won’t play anything apart from this formation he set his heart on.
Only problem is that it doesn’t suit the players. Brogan can’t buy a game despite looking good every time he comes on as a sub and Nicholson can’t not get a game just because he throws a ball far even though he looks like a death trap and seemingly can’t defend.
