I think Butler is fully aware that his job could be at risk if he doesn’t gain promotion. However, if he does turn things round and his contract isn’t being extended, it could be a source for worry down the line which may affect him. I don’t think this is that hard to work out.

‘Down the line’ perhaps and in the (somewhat unlikely) event of him ‘turning things around’ then yes absolutely. If we were at end Jan / feb / March and sitting top of the league your reasoning would stand, but only 6 weeks after the start of the season and on the back of some very questionable results and even more questionable performances? Come on! If job security was going to be an issue why agree a one year contract in the first place? All we’ve done is ensure that, whilst his job is non-the-safer, he will pocket a chonk of pay off cash when we let him go. Cash that could otherwise have been used towards playing budget or a more suitable replacement. Exactly the same mistake as we made with Jimmy.
