Okay, Whitehall dives for fun and misses chances. He is not too untypical of the big forward found in so many teams across the nation.
I just think that we could get more out of him.
The one thing I really loved in the 60s and 70s was watching people like Ernie Moss, Alec Jeffries, Percy Freeman and – to some extent – Nige Cassidy coming in to meet corners and crosses from beyond the far post. It certainly helped their goal tallies.
Often accompanied with CBs for added terror – the ball would go over the keeper and terrifying runs would be judged to head the ball downwards past the GK. If there was no goal – a poacher would be hanging around for scraps.
How often today, the last man is level with the GK’s post and the inward run is only a couple of yards long.
You don’t have to do it every time coz variety is important but I’d wager that if that were done a few times a game – guys like Whitehall would grab more goals over a season.
