Butler explains why Connor Smith deal was “ruled out straight away”

Iron boss Andy Butler has addressed the transfer speculation surrounding former loan star Connor Smith, confirming that while discussions took place, a key financial obstacle prevented the popular midfielder’s return to Glanford Park.

The 23-year-old, who scored 8 goals in 17 appearances during a loan spell from Hearts during the 2034/24 campaign, was spotted at the National League North Play Off final win over Chester sparking intense speculation among supporters that a permanent move could be on the horizon.

However, the manager has now clarified the situation, revealing that transfer fee demands from Smith’s current club Hamilton Academical quickly ended any hopes of a deal.

“Conversations were had with Connor,” the manager confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside. “His parent team wanted a fee for him, and that kind of ruled that one out straight away.”

Despite the failed pursuit, the Iron boss was full of praise for the player’s character and ability.

“Connor’s a good player and he’s a good, good person,” he added. “It was good to see him after the game.”

Smith wasn’t the only former player linked with a summer return to North Lincolnshire. The manager also confirmed discussions had taken place regarding striker Jack Muldoon, another name frequently mentioned by the Scunthorpe faithful.

“A conversation I had with Jack,” he confirmed, before explaining why that avenue has also closed. “I think he’s signed a two-year deal with Harrogate. So that shuts that door.”
