Scunthorpe United midfielder Zain Westbrooke says he is “enjoying his football again” after extending his loan stay at Glanford Park until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old, on loan from Doncaster Rovers, has been a key fixture in the midfield of an Iron side that have won their last seven games in all competitions.
Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside following a 3-1 victory over Clitheroe in the FA Trophy, Westbrooke admitted that staying with the National League side was an easy decision.
“I’m really happy to get that done,” he told BBC Radio Humberside said. “I’m enjoying my football here, getting good minutes, and feeling like I’ve got a good place in the team. We’re on a good run and there is a lot of potential here.”
Despite the drop in divisions, Westbrooke believes the culture at Scunthorpe is as strong as any he has experienced in the professional game.
“It’s probably up there with one of the best dressing rooms I’ve been in,” he said. “The staff instill a lot of confidence into the boys. After a couple of injuries and not getting into the team [at Doncaster], I needed to get back into my momentum. Being in a confident environment has really helped me.”
While the loan extension keeps him at the club until the summer, questions remain regarding Westbrooke’s long-term future. With his contract at Doncaster Rovers nearing its end, the midfielder is eligible to talk to other clubs, but he insists he is in no rush to move on.
When asked if a permanent move to Scunthorpe had been discussed, Westbrooke remained coy: “No, nothing yet. I think we’ve just managed to get the loan extension done, so we’ll settle for that for now.
“I’m in no rush. I’m in a good place now where I am on the pitch. I don’t have that stress of worrying about when I’m going to get my next chance. I just want to focus on this season – we’ve got ambitions here and we want to see where that can go.”
