Team news and potential tactical changes for Scunthorpe’s match against Peterborough

All the team news and potential changes ahead of Peterborough’s visit to face Scunthorpe at Glanford Park on Saturday.

The Iron suffered their first defeat under Stuart McCall at Luton on Saturday, while Posh were stuffed 4-0 at home by Barnsley.

Iron team news

Scunthorpe have no fresh injury worries after the squad came through the midweek Checkatrade Trophy meeting with Lincoln unscathed. Stuart McCall confirmed that the absentees for the Iron will be striker Ike Ugbo and midfielder James Horsfield, alongside long-term injury concerns Matt Gilks and Rory Watson.

Ugbo recently returned to Chelsea to have treatment on his hamstring problem and was expected to be out for four weeks, however, he is now due to return to training with United next week and could be ahead of schedule with his comeback.

As for Horsfield, he is back running on the grass without any pain, so he is likely to be back training with the side early next week.

Potential tactical changes

After making seven changes for the visit of Lincoln on Tuesday, McCall is likely to revert back to a similar line-up to the one that lost out Luton last weekend.

The biggest decision for the Scunthorpe manager to make is what to do with his leaky defence, as goals continue to keep flying in at either end of the field.

Given Posh’s prowess in front of goal, McCall may plunge for the same formation that he went with against Charlton in the Iron’s last home league game, operating with three centre-backs.

That formation, whilst it did not combat United’s defensive issues, it did provide much more freedom to the full-backs, central midfielders and offensive players.

Posh team news

Peterborough made five changes for their midweek penalty shootout defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion U-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy, so they are also likely to make a number of alterations for the Iron clash.

Posh midfielder Marcus Maddison had been suffering from tonsilitis throughout the week, but after returning to training on Friday, he should be involved at Glanford Park.

Josh Yorwerth has been suffering through illness and is unlikely to feature but fellow defender, Tyler Denton, has returned to training after an ankle injury and is available for selection. Goalkeeper Conor O’Malley remains sidelined with a shoulder problem.
