Southend United manager Chris Powell says he is unsure where on-loan Scunthorpe United midfielder Sam Mantom’s long-term future lies.
Mantom impressed in his first Southend start on Saturday, helping Powell’s side beat Rotherham United 2-0 at Roots Hall, but the Shrimpers gaffer is unsure whether he will be available on a permanent deal in the summer.
“It’s early days with Sam,” Powell told the Southend Echo.
“He played a few games for them last year but he’s been in and out this year and Scunthorpe have gone a different way.
“I know he still has a contract at Scunthorpe but depending on what happens with us and them then it could be one we look at in the future because he’s certainly a player who has what I like in a midfielder.
Powell, who has been earmarked to join the England set up after this summers World Cup was full of praise for Mantom’s performance against promotion hopefuls Rotherham following his recent return from injury and You can take a look at all the latest world cup tips ahead of the tournament now.
“I signed him when he was injured, which was a big call for me, but I knew if we could get him fit and eventually get him into the squad and team that he would do well”, he continued.
“I thought he was excellent on Saturday, his passing and decision making was very good.”
