Russ rues missing out on O’Toole

Russ Wilcox seemingly regrets not moving to sign the former Bristol Rovers John-Joe O’Tool in the summer by suggesting he is the only player he can think of who does a similar job to injured playmaker Dave Syers.

O’Toole was a target for the Iron in June, but Wilcox decided against offering him deal suggesting at the time he was ‘too similar’ to the former Doncaster midfielder.

He scored 13 goals for Rovers last term before securing a move to Northampton in the summer.

Wilcox told the Official Website: “We have to make sure if we bring someone in, we bring someone in with quality.

“You give me a name of a player who’s going to cost nothing to bring in that’s going to be within our budget that will get 10, 12 goals a season.

“There’s not many around. John-Joe O’Toole jumps out at me but he’s only just signed back in League Two.

“Apart from that, I’m sure you can get two or three names that have scored ten plus goals last season and they will be playing in someone’s first team.”
