Reality check needed

Iron fan Dave Green suggests some fans need a ‘reality check’ as the Iron enter the last month of the 2013/14 campaign.

So with 6 games of the League 2 season remaining we sit 2nd in the league, 2 points off the summit and 7 points clear of the play off places. We have a manager who is still to taste defeat in his career, a run of 24 matches stretching back to November last year and a run which has smashed not only club records but also Football League records, yet, astonishingly there a still sections of the “support” whether they be on the terraces on a Saturday or via social media and internet forums who are not happy with things at Scunthorpe United FC.

I think for these fans a big reality check is needed.

No one ever said League 2 was going to be easy. The main aim of this season was to stop the rot of recent years and start to rebuild under our new ambitious chairman Peter Swann (pictured)

We were never going to get out of this division by playing Barcelona esq football week in week out. That is not how you get out of English footballs basement division. Yes for entertainment purposes it would be lovely but it is just not possible every week. As we saw on Saturday from Wycombe who played 85% of the match with 11 men behind the ball teams are happy to come here, frustrate us and leave with a point. Even when we went down to 10 men they still weren’t interested in anything more than a point.

As daft as it sounds we are maybe even too good for this division. Just look at our results against the top 7 sides. Unbeaten against all of them as well as doing the double over current leaders Rochdale scoring 7 in the process without reply. I firmly believe we will go on and be pushing for at least a play-off place next season in League 1.

Just be thankful that we are, barring an absolute disaster, heading out of this division in the right direction. I’m pretty sure that back in November if we’d have been offered this position with 6 games remaining 100% of Iron fans would have snapped your hand off. I also know some folk down the A180 who would give their right arms to be in our position.

It’s now time to stop the moaning and show Russ and the boys how proud we are of their achievement’s this season. It would also be nice to see a few stay away fans return to Glanford Park for the last 3 home games. The lads really do deserve the support.
