Former Iron director and boxing promoter Dennis Hobson is leading a consortium set to take over the Football League’s bottom club Hartlepool United, according to the Daily Mail.

Staff at Victoria Park were told on Monday that Norwegian owners Increased Oil Recovery were set to sell having been at the club since 1997.

Hobson was removed as a Scunthorpe United director at an Extraordinary General Meeting last August.

The Sheffield boxing promoter been expected to take on the role of chairman when Steve Wharton stepped down, but the role was given to current chairman Peter Swann.

Hobson had also clashed with ex Chairman Steve Wharton in March 2013, claiming the Iron’s board had not done enough to stave off the threat of relegation to League One.
