    Personally, I am not a fan of being reliant on the Americans or at the behest of Russia if we scrap the deterrent. Nuclear disarmament is only viable if done multilaterally, otherwise no-one will agree to it.

    Catch 22, do you unilaterally disarm your nuclear weapons and risk being overrun in the future by larger superior land, air and sea forces from bigger nations, or hang on to a deterrent you will most likely never use? It’s not an easy one to answer but all nations with nuclear weapons, ourselves included, know that once a long range warhead is launched in anger towards another similar armed nation it’s pretty much game over for mankind. The destructive power of modern day nuclear weapons is mind blowingly scary compared to Hiroshima in 1945.

    Some would say that the lack of use of any nuclear weapon post-Nagasaki is vindication of MAD theory.
