July 25, 2025 at 5:19 pm #307607Not enough of them have played a full 90 mins to make that call, so anyone in the team from last season plus Eze and Simmonds who we haven’t signed yet.
July 25, 2025 at 5:34 pm #307610anyone but the keeper?
July 25, 2025 at 6:48 pm #307611Only seen the Frod and Cleggy games.
Campbell
Starbuck Evans Frenchy Jean Denton
Scales Ewing
Roberts Beestin Eze
WhitehallJuly 25, 2025 at 6:52 pm #307612Forgot to add the jury is still out on Campbell and Starbuck but currently the best we have in their positions.
I would drop Beestin or Scales for a proper defensive midfielder in away games (if we had one).
July 25, 2025 at 7:19 pm #307613I can’t believe I’m about to say this. I’d go Rory Watson ahead of Campbell.
July 25, 2025 at 7:31 pm #307614Watson
Starbuck Evans Belehouan Denton
Beestin. Rowley (if fit)
Ewing
Roberts Howe
WhitehallJuly 25, 2025 at 7:59 pm #307617Whatever the lineup the bench will be all forwards!
July 25, 2025 at 9:59 pm #307619Assuming the back four Bill and I suggested the only defenders we could have on the bench would be Horton and Boyce.
I think we only would have one out and out midfielder on the bench (either Scales or Rowley if the other starts). Assume the other goalkeeper gets a spot then 3 vacancies for forwards.
Any 3 from Beck, Carlton, Chadwick, Dawson and either Eze or Howe assuming the other of those 2 start.
The squad is unbalanced for me with only 2 weeks to go until we kick off for real.
Defensive midfielder and a full back that can pull a shift at centre back are the minimum needed.

July 25, 2025 at 10:37 pm #307621Like you say MK ,the lack of a defensive midfielder is a problem ( is Rowley that man?)
What I’ve seen of the new players my view is,Ewing looks good,Howe looks good,Chadwick looks promising,Dawson still doesn’t look match fit to me ,Eze looks ok but still not convinced (at the moment),Belehouan is a wait and see player, but it’s early days and my feelings are on the optimistic side. Think Watson will be ok.
Tomorrow’s game will be very interesting .July 26, 2025 at 2:38 pm #3076355 at the back and 7 forwards on the bench.
Bonkers.
July 26, 2025 at 2:55 pm #307636Looks like we’re in for a cagey start to the season with a back 5, with only one more game before Tamworth it looks like his mind is made up. Interesting that only 2 of the summer signings start and JB has to if he wants 3 CBs.
Oh dear.July 26, 2025 at 3:13 pm #307637IMO not sure if AB even has a scooby doo what his best starting 11 will be come Tamworth .. the squad is so unbalanced with defense and midfield being over looked with regard to close season signings .. can see us scoring plenty but conceding more.

July 26, 2025 at 3:20 pm #307638Denton and Starbuck are playing well forward. Beestin DMF.
Comfortable at the moment and 1-0 up.
July 26, 2025 at 4:07 pm #3076394-4-2 second half. Whitehall and Boyce off Beck and Howe on.
CR10 gets his second from the spot.
July 26, 2025 at 6:39 pm #307640Easy 4-1 win in the end. CR10 hat-trick and one for Declan Howe.
Bit of a Maison Campbell faux-pas for their late consolation so the jury will still be out on who starts in goal.
The 5 at the back wasn’t that at all. The fullbacks were playing almost as wingers (and seeing a lot of the ball) Boyce was central with Evans in the LB slot and Belehouan RB. Beestin defensive MF Scales and Ewing MF with Roberts just behind Whitehall. So a kind of 3-1-4-1-1.
Whatever it was it worked. Moors rarely got near our goal and Campbell was a spectator most of the first half. However although it certainly wasn’t defensive, for all our possession we only scored one goal.
Second half 4-4-2. Denton and Starbuck dropped back alongside Evans and Belehouan. Beestin, Scales, Ewing and Roberts in MF with Howe partnering Beck up top.
Scored three but conceded one, so I guess that tells its own story.
Liked the look of Big Jean, think he’s a definite upgrade on Maxi. Chadwick looked the business too when he came on and Howe is so quick, he’ll score a lot of goals and miss a lot too! Wasn’t entirely convinced by Eze, but the formation was all over the place by the time he made his cameo. Likewise Dawson.
Interesting that Shipstone and Simmonds didn’t get on. Makes me wonder if they’ll be released next week.
No Rowley or Horton either presumably for fitness reasons.
Interesting afternoon though.

July 26, 2025 at 7:19 pm #307641That’s the most positive assessment of a game I’ve read from you NI, been to a few games at the same time up north as you and can’t think of a positive game, so am buoyed by your assessment.
Know it’s only a friendly but it’s the first playing mainly the starting lineup within reason.July 26, 2025 at 8:10 pm #307642I prefer a 3-1 half to a 1-0 half.

July 26, 2025 at 10:12 pm #307643So Campbell was mostly a spectator but still managed to cost us a goal (again). Fear it’s going to be a long season ahead if he’s between the sticks.
July 26, 2025 at 10:16 pm #307644No Rowley or Horton either presumably for fitness reasons
Butler said post match that both will be back early next week. Horton took a knock to one of his feet and Rowley had a slight thigh strain, but as I said both will be fine start of next week.
Butler also said we have to sort a few thins out before hopefully another signing coming in next week. That will more than likely be the cover for RB.

Match report reads different but I guess you’d expect that, or would you?
July 26, 2025 at 11:14 pm #307646Thing is BLT when there’s been so much discussion on the subject of keepers and whether or not they’re good enough that you go to these games expecting to see something that is either going to confirm your worst fears or allay them.
First half no worries at all. Second half a shot came in which Campbell went down to gather. It ballooned up of his chest and he gathered it second time.
Similar thing for the goal and I’m probably being a bit harsh on him as Evans didn’t cover himself in glory either, but it was a messy goal to give away. And let’s face it, whoever is between the sticks, Campbell or Watson they’re going to come under extra scrutiny be it fair or unfair.
Mind you it was the mighty Gary Madine, goal machine who was credited with the goal!
Question is do you play a system that protects the keeper (knowing his handling isn’t great) or go for one where attack is seen as being the best form of defence.
I reckon that’s where we are lineup wise.

The answer is probably somewhere along the lines of we should have prioritised some of the budget to sign a decent goalkeeper who doesn’t lead to these sorts of questions being asked, rather than signing a plethora of attackers, half of whom won’t even make it onto the bench come the opening day of the season.

July 27, 2025 at 7:08 am #307648If we are releasing Shipstone and Simmonds then Butler has not been fair with them. To hang onto them until a week before the season begins does not give them much time to get another club!! He should have seen enough of them to decide by now. From is being reported on here is correct he is going to bring in a new player next week that he hasn’t seen play yet.

The jury’s still out.
Would you rather get punched in the face or kicked in the balls?
What a choice we’ve got

July 27, 2025 at 11:29 am #307650Speaking from personal experience – punched in the face, believe me!

We have a game on Tuesday, so will more than likely play that to have one last look at them. The new player will probably be a RB on loan. I doubt it would be a permanent RB as Ross is back running on the grass.
Butler must see something in the pair of them due to them sticking around throughout all pre season. Especially Simmonds as he started last game and scored.

I know it’s 7 subs in NL, can you use 5?July 27, 2025 at 2:03 pm #307657If we are releasing Shipstone and Simmonds then Butler has not been fair with them. All depends on what is agreed with those players agents. Perhaps they want them in a squad situation and keeping fit – things we never hear about. A lot od people were raving about Chapman, as he gone because Chadwick came in ?
