With what you’ve seen / heard / read so far – what would be your starting X1 for the first league game in a 4-4-2 formation.
Gk Campbell
Rb Starbuck
Cb Evans
Cb Boyce
Lb DentonRm CR10
Cm Ewing
Cm Beestin
Lm EzeCf Whitehall

July 20, 2025 at 1:25 pm #307259Surely not Boyce to start the season. I’d go with that new CB, Jean whatever his name is. We won’t be playing 4/4/2 away at Tamworth in the season opener, so not sure why you would want people to name players within that formation. Little confusing.
Butler will probably go with his tried and tested 5 at the back and try and pinch a win, while boring everybody to death in the process.
July 20, 2025 at 1:50 pm #307260After reading some of the posts on here I believe the lineup will be:
Maison Chuckle/Rory Chuckle
J Caughtoutofposition
A Concreteboots
W Threpennybithead
T FailstocutoutacrossCR10*
K Softinthetackle
A Giveitaway
D Oozelum-BirdD Whitehall**
C Offtarget*Injured after 15 minutes. Sub O Passit-Backwards.
**Sent off on 35 minutes. Sub M Cowsarse-Banjo

I believed the consensus was that 4-4-2 is the optimal formation for the level / quality of player we have.
Boyce… is there anyone better, is he any worse – I’m not sure?
July 20, 2025 at 2:31 pm #307265Only saw Frenchie Jean in the first half against Frod. Didn’t appear against Cleggy which was the only other friendly I’ve seen.
He looked more comfortable on the ball than Maxi and definitely has more pace. Given that Maxi was the quickest of our CB’s last season that’s a good sign. Cannot comment on his defensive capability as Frod’s only moment of real danger in the first half was a right wing set piece that our whole defence and No.1 goalkeeper all chose to ignore.
Boyce is steady and consistent but the better attacking players in the National League will be too quick for him.
July 20, 2025 at 3:58 pm #307270I just can’t see us going with only 2 in central midfield with the players we have. Whichever formation we played with last season we played every game that I can remember with Clunan plus 2 others in central midfield (usually Rowley and Scales/Beestin). Still slightly concerned that we haven’t really replaced Clunan, Ewing seems much more forward thinking. With that in mind I’d go 4-3-3:
Polo Hands / Dracula
Starbuck (ideally a new RB)
Belehouan
Evans
DentonEwing
Rowley
BeestinRoberts
Whitehall

July 20, 2025 at 4:06 pm #307272Seems to me from what I’ve seen in pre season so far we’ve just signed loads of random players for positions we don’t need and already have, and still lacking badly in centre mid
July 20, 2025 at 4:12 pm #307273Agreed, centre midfield is still a problem and so is centre half…especially if we’re going 3/5 at the back.

Exactly that .. scatter gun signings to be cobbled together until it clicks which may be some time .. too many options for me to come up with a guessimated starting 11 tough i do think Boyce should be used off the bench and not a starter ..Evans and Jean the new fella first choice CB pairing
Expecting a mid to lower mid table finish .. though would not be surprised of in the relegation mix at some point and AB under pressure.. first season back i NL target has to be survivalJuly 20, 2025 at 4:16 pm #307275Seems to me from what I’ve seen in pre season so far we’ve just signed loads of random players for positions we don’t need and already have, and still lacking badly in centre mid
My thoughts too, surely 2 less outfield could’ve led to a more than tidy GK?
July 20, 2025 at 4:39 pm #307277Yep. We played our best football last season when we ditched 3/5 at the back and went 4-3-3 with 1 central striker and 2 wingers. We now have 5 strikers (Whitehall, Beck, Howe, Dawson, Carlton, plus a 6th when we keep playing this Okera Simmonds in pre-season)!
Why do we have so many when we’re crying out for a capable keeper, a defensively minded midfielder and a right back (until Barrows is back). Doesn’t make much sense to me.

July 20, 2025 at 5:12 pm #307282Plus a 7th when you add Billy Chadwick!
July 20, 2025 at 6:25 pm #307288Don’t think we have any full backs suitable to play the wing back role, what begs the question why we stacked with so many wingers if wing backs is the way were going to go
August 6, 2025 at 7:53 pm #309025Let’s hope we’re going out to score rather than to stop them scoring?
