    Skegness Town

    01 Jul Louth Town 5-1 W
    05 Jul Lutterworth 1-1 D
    09 Jul Brigg Town 0-0 D
    12 Jul Hinckley AFC 4-1 W
    19 Jul Coalville Town 4-4 D

Dakin bagged a hat-trick yesterday. They had two cleared off the line and also hit the bar and the post.

Dakin got a brace against Louth as did Johnson.

4 different goal scorers v Hinckley.

They hit the bar & the post in the 0-0 against Brigg.

It seems they press high and obviously are hitting a lot of goals.

They have a Reserve & U18 team too.

I’ll have a pound on Dakin getting a goal.

    Highlights v Louth

Gone from 3 CBs to 1. Will he find the happy medium?

Simmonds must be rated by Butler as he’s been involved in every game we’ve played. Simmonds scored a good goal according to match report.

    Level 9 … 0-3 Level 5

AB should know his starting X1 now.
Hopefully he’ll deploy them for the remaining two fixtures allowing them to complete a full match.
The next 2 games need to be undertaken as if they were league games.

I notice that whatever vampire was in goal kept a clean sheet.

Watson pulled off a good save with his feet, but the was always a pretty good shot stopper, only thing back in the day was that he was terrified of crosses.

I hope he’s more comfortable with that part of his game now.

Wow Watson will be so relieved he is at least getting a modicum of approval on this forum before the actual season starts.

Jean Belehouan. Any initial thoughts about Max’s replacement?
More generally, which recruits may be looking better than squad members from last season?

Maybe he is. That’s why it’s always fairer to give players the benefit of the doubt before a ball’s been kicked and to save mass knicker wetting.

I’ll tell you more after I’ve seen them on Saturday but I’d say Belehouan will be pretty much like for like for Maxi.

Goalkeepers have been discussed ad nauseam elsewhere. Horton looks to be an upgrade on Kelly. Eze looks much stronger and more skilful than Fadera. Howe is certainly a better striker than Fishburn and Ewing is a definite upgrade on sick note Law.

Joey Dawson for Fin Shrimpton? That’s got to be another plus providing he stays fit. Have we replaced Clunan? Not sure. But we’ve also signed Chadwick on a season long loan and it’s looking likely that Simmonds might be given a contract.

Looking more dynamic going forward certainly. Stronger in defence? Possibly not. Solid in midfield? Not sure.

Good enough to stay in NL? We’ll see!

I should make it clear that my views are based on video highlights only from pre-season games.I was impressed by the tempo at which we played at Skeg and passing looked much improved. Not seen enough to rate several but Ewing and Eze look like upgrades. We are told JB has pace which, if true, gives him an edge over Boyce, Evans & Maxi.

Think we’ve got some exciting players in the squad .My only concern is have we got a “Neil Bishop” type to galvanise the team on a wet windy night in Halifax?

Agree with bill ( yes it happens occasionally ) the midfield enforcer role is something we have missed for several seasons now.

I only saw 9 minutes of highlights from Skeg but thought that Rory seemed to exude a level of self-confidence I’m not sure that I’ve seen before.

Except when Scunny play a night game there and it’s wet and windy.

I think Rene made the point earlier about the difference in levels but I’d take that with a pinch of salt. I’ve seen a few level 9 v 6 cup games and they’ve been closer than I thought they would be.

I think the Neal Bishop style midfield general has evolved since his days. A player in that old role needs to be more than that these days. Like a Clunan with heft.

Less necessity for a ball winner at the level we are. You just wait until the opposition give it away, we’ve done it loads.

Other than the goalkeeper position this is my biggest worry for the season ahead. Clunan was a massive part of our spine and we certainly missed him when he was out of the team.

It’s pretty obvious we haven’t replaced him, Ewing has been much more forward thinking in these pre-season games and none of our other midfielders can play in that position (Rowley, Scales, Brogan, Beestin…they’re all pretty pants defensively).

The squad seems massively unbalanced. We’ve got 6 central strikers currently playing (Whitehall, Howe, Dawson, Simmonds, Carlton, Beck…could also throw Beestin and Chadwick into the mix to make it 8). Going to be hard keeping them happy with (hopefully) 1 spot to fill when we play our preferred 4-3-3. In contrast we don’t have a single defensively minded midfielder and no fit right back (Starbuck ain’t the answer).

Dunno if it means anything but on the skeg highlights names/squad numbers were on the shirts. Beck’s was blank. Not bothered making him one cos he’s on his way?
