Butler, in his open-top bus interview, referred to being slated for playing five at the back but seemed to say (unless my ears misheard, or I have misinterpreted the moment) that he intends to play five at the back next season. Can anyone else confirm what I (think I) heard?
May 27, 2025 at 10:40 am #305111I thought he said we started the season with a back 5 and finished with a back 5. I took that as a reference to putting Boycie on at the end and having a pop at those (me included) that were critical of playing a back 5 for too long.

Ah, got you. I’m pretty sure he also said something about next season in this context, though.

May 27, 2025 at 12:25 pm #305118Its the Ego, and let’s face it most have one especially of late for scunny, most would (and have) rather lose their job than change.
So I’ll give Butler his due for changing.2 users thanked author for this post.

They are superior in ability compared to the average person when it comes to sport so to be told by these people they are doing it wrong will rankle them a bit. Ego, arrogance call it what you will but most of them have it and the response to people who say ” I’ve watched this game 50 years I’m entitled to my opinion” is,” absolutely you are but I don’t have to take any notice of you because you’ve never been a professional in the sport like me “. Arrogance and ego part and parcel of the everyday professional sportspeoples profile.

A bit of this, maybe, but couldn’t you say the same about plumbers, bricklayers, accountants, computer programmers, mechanics, teachers, doctors, opticians, etc etc..? There’s always someone with little to no experience who thinks they can do your job better than you can. The only exception is DJs – their job is a con and even one short plank with turkey teeth could do it.
May 27, 2025 at 2:19 pm #305124I can cope with a back 5 if we have the players but we didn’t. We had FBs trying to be WBs and 3 CBs with no pace which at least one should have. My opinion only.

I think we were a player short in each department, tbh. Midfield lacked a hard nut and up front lacked a fox in the box.
May 27, 2025 at 2:23 pm #305126If he start with 5 at the back he has learnt absolutely nothing.
Then the longer he plays it will determine how badly we will do.
I’d say he’s learnt he can get promoted doing it
May 27, 2025 at 3:19 pm #305127I reckon most people who watch football will attempt to put the manager right on football than a bricky on how to build a wall but hey it’s again just another opinion and most people are only interested in their own.

Yes, more will attempt to put a football manager right. You don’t often get multiple thousand people turning up to watch someone lay a brick.
May 27, 2025 at 4:08 pm #305144Though at times it could be more entertaining.

Correct so your initial analogy was flawed, I accept your apology you don’t have to come back and offer another.

It wasn’t flawed. You have failed to understand it.

You fail to remember you are most people.
May 27, 2025 at 10:40 pm #305156If he had stopped playing 5 across the back after the glaring failure and exposure of it away at Scarborough, and not subsequently spent the next few months and games being so negative and defensive of the dreaded and boring system we would have finished as champions.
For the record he dropped the 5 across the back after L.T left, and I do not believe it was his own choice to do so.
One of the directors said “if your shop window is not attractive everything else behind that won’t be successful”.
Our shop window i.e the football was not attractive and we were in danger of dropping out of even the play off places.
Mr B turned things around so he must now keep going forward and definitely not backwards. Its nice that he has a sense of humour and can reference his faux pas humourously.
Before I share the laughter I will need to see the squad for next season and where we are table wise at the end of October.

Did said Director apply that philosophy to the Stadium Weekender?
May 28, 2025 at 10:58 am #305176Isn’t it better to go up via playoffs? A cash boost.
I’d guess £70k+.
Anyone know better?May 28, 2025 at 11:54 am #305180Look back over the years and for whatever reason the most successful formation on this pitch in claret & blue needs to be with a 4 across the back.
A 5 very quickly becomes ultra defensive and we become unable to get out of it, so don’t even risk it.
May 28, 2025 at 5:00 pm #305187No where near Les.
We only get 50% of the Chorley receipts after all expenses were paid for.
The receipts for the final all go to the NL after expenses then all clubs get a cut or something like. -
