has passed away aged 88, one of the greatest players to play in the White shirts of Scunthorpe United, he scored 4 goals in the first game I saw at the OSG against Plymouth

September 2, 2025 at 12:03 pm #310710Sad news indeed. Saw him play several times – from the half way line his pace was electric, left defenders with ease and a great finisher.
211 goals in 338 games. Scored well for all the clubs he played after leaving Leicester City. Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting to him once at that special evening at the Wortley Hotel. A very soft spoken, humble man, an honour to have shook his hand.
God Bless IRON LEGEND.

September 2, 2025 at 12:06 pm #310711I had an hours chat with him in the afternoon at the Wortley before his ‘Evening With’ with guest Jimmy Greaves. Should have recorded it, so many great stories he had. 22nd Sept 2000 that was.

RIP

September 2, 2025 at 12:40 pm #310714Sad day indeed. I was lucky enough to see him play.
Vaguely remember that Blackpool cup tie when he scored a hat-trick but certainly the five goals in the 8-1 demolition of Luton.
One player Newcastle fans also fondly remember. More than could be said for a certain Scandinavian mercenary this week.
True legend, RIP Barrie.

Was a good tribute for him and a superb night that was richly deserved. Can remember one match report in the NOWT. The reporter said his team mates wouldn’t pass him the ball so Barrie went back to collect the ball deep in defence and went the full length of the field on his own and scored. The dressing room clique didn’t like him doing well.
September 2, 2025 at 3:17 pm #310730R.I.P. Barry. A hero of mine as a young lad. Still have memories of the Luton match. Believe he scored 3 of them in a 5 minute spell.
Club tribute to him says Ken Hodgson came as part of the deal. Memory must be fading as I thought Ken played with Barry.September 2, 2025 at 4:01 pm #310731Yes it’s a sad day, clubs don’t have many legends but Barrie was one of ours, I put him alongside Jack Brownsword when I think of Iron legends. Just a wonderful wonderful footballer RIP Barrie thanks for the memories.

September 2, 2025 at 4:51 pm #310734Barrie’s first hat trick in League Football was in a First Division game for Leicester City against Bolton Wanderers on the 4th May 1955, he was just 17. Barrie mentioned the opposing centre forward that day was one Nat Lofthouse ( England) who congratulated him at the final whistle. A proud moment for him.

Guess the pigeon post is not what it used to be up there.

September 12, 2025 at 12:44 pm #311127Have I missed an announcement about what the club intends to do to mark Barrie’s passing? Surely we are not going to wait until the end of the season and wrap it up in the minute’s applause? Personally, I think we can make an exception for him without setting an unhelpful precedent.
I have asked the club if there is a plan for a tribute at the Truro game but have had no response to date. It may be that we need to clear things with his family. Either way, it would be good to know plans. If I am honest, I expected a tribute at the Wealdstone game.
September 12, 2025 at 2:01 pm #311129You’re not the only one waiting (on a different matter) for a reply from the club.
September 12, 2025 at 2:16 pm #311130Just need a third one of these for an awaywego appearance.
