…who was Jesus Christ?
If you haven’t looked at the Holy Bible for a long time, take a look at the book of John ,and try to answer that question when you read through it.November 5, 2020 at 11:47 am #196964
It was a name invented at the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE.
Before this the name Jesus (a corruption of the phrase “hail Zeus”) does not appear in any accounts or scholarly writings of the time.
Jesus Christ was pure plagiarism of older religions and is virtually identical to the Babylonian Nimrod, the Egyptian Horus and the Roman/Persian Mithras.
In short a character from a fairy story.
Try reading some other books. There’s a lot out there.November 6, 2020 at 1:28 pm #196985IronIronIronParticipantOffline

Not being funny BPG, but didn’t you ask the same question on here a few months ago? I’m guessing you think the answer is God? Hey, if that makes you happy and at peace then carry on I say.November 7, 2020 at 8:23 am #196999

He drove a Honda. But he didn’t like talking about it.

The one excuse that every atheist, that every agnostic will want to use on the final day of judgement is the excuse of ignorance.
“God,I didn’t know You were there.If I just would’ve known I would have believed You.I would have followed You.I would’ve obeyed You.”
The agnostic says “I’m not going to say “There’s no God”.
I just simply don’t know whether there’s a God because I don’t think there’s sufficient evidence to come to the conclusion one way or another.”
That terrifies me when I hear someone say that, because what you’re saying now is not only you’re not willing to affirm the existence of God but you’re pinning the blame on that unwillingness on God himself for not giving you sufficient information.
But as God says in ROMANS CHAPTER I VERSE 20
FOR SINCE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD GOD’S INVISIBLE QUALITIES-HIS ETERNAL POWER AND DIVINE NATURE-HAVE BEEN CLEARLY SEEN,BEING UNDERSTOOD FROM WHAT HAS BEEN MADE,SO THAT PEOPLE ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE.November 7, 2020 at 11:27 am #197016
I have a tattoo of God on my arm. Mrs NI says I haven’t because she can’t see it, but I know it’s there even though I can’t see it either.
Perhaps I should quote her from that there Bible book. How about Timothy I. 2:11: –
“Let a woman learn in silence with full submission. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man: she is to keep silent!”
On second thoughts, best not!November 7, 2020 at 9:57 pm #197029HeathParticipantOffline

Funnily enough, today I was reading an old uni essay I did many years ago on the arguments for the existence of god. I refuted the arguments for. The theologist tutor gave me a good mark. I guess he thought it came down to faith rather than belief. Personally, I find it difficult to have faith in something I don’t believe in. What do you think BPG? Is it faith or belief for you?November 8, 2020 at 8:01 am #197036

Nah, too much evasiveness Bill. Failing to answer people’s questions is a strategy of the door-knockers because they want people to make up the answers for themselves. That’s because a) it’s more convincing that way, and b) because those ‘doing doors’ haven’t a clue.
Religion isn’t about rational argument and an evidence-based, objective understanding of the world, it’s about faith, about belief, as DM points out. A bit like Brexit, really, and in recent years like politics in general.November 8, 2020 at 9:28 am #197039

A video telling me what the Bible has all the answers doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence as to why the Bible has the answers. I am sceptical of the Bible having merit as the great answer from a deity we all must abide by.November 8, 2020 at 2:18 pm #197072Mel KParticipantOffline

You do realise the only reason you believe in Jesus and God is because your parents indoctrinated you when you were young?
If you had been born in a Muslim country you would be convinced that Mohammed was the prophet. In Thailand you would believe in Buddha.
Children should learn about religion as a vague concept, and not be allowed to sign up for one until they are 18 years oldNovember 8, 2020 at 3:18 pm #197083

Exactly. It’s a book written from the morals of its era. I’d have thought that a book which can be used to answer scepticism about God’s existence (e.g. whenever we question BPG and others, their answer is read the Bible and you will see) would be a little more convincing than what it is; a product of its time. It would contain evidence, information and morality which was ahead of its time, not of it. That it is tells me it is a book written by man.
Now, I know not all Christians think of the Bible as literal, so I don’t want this to be seen as an attack on the more liberal. However, it’s clear that BPG leans towards literalism, especially as he has previously admitted to being a Calvinist, and has told us to read the Bible because it’s the word of God in response to our queries.
If people want to base their religion off the Bible, be my guest, but I don’t believe in it. I won’t stop others from doing so, and I am always open to changing my beliefs if the evidence sees fit. My views have fluctuated throughout the years, especially politically (believe it or not, I was once a dallier with the SWP). I am an admitted atheist, but that doesn’t mean I would always be if there is evidence for religion. What I mean by this is physical evidence showing that a creator exists and no natural explanation can be found. Bible verses will not do that, because there is no evidence it is the word of God (people trying to understand God through religious prose, maybe) and the religion it preaches is erroneous. If indisputable evidence of a creator does appear I suspect it wouldn’t be what the literalists of any religion prophesise, so if I was to find God I don’t think I would be Christian. I think deism is probably the only belief that is remotely plausible in terms of creation.November 8, 2020 at 5:30 pm #197118
