I’d also expect a leader not to bumble or dither, like he has done all the way through this pandemic.
Take the latest wave of infections. In January Sage warned that, “No intervention, other than a complete, pre-emptive closure of borders, or the mandatory quarantine of all visitors upon arrival in designated facilities, irrespective of testing history, can get close to fully prevent the importation of cases or new variants.”
The government placed India on the red list on 23rd of April. A full fortnight after Bangladesh and Pakistan. An estimated 20,000 arrived from the sub-continent during that time.
That is fair enough, but I’m sure I’m correct in believing there would be many many on the liberal left who would have a big problem with Boris completely closing any borders without giving giving those who claim to be British the opportunity to ‘come home.’ I can just imagine the front page of the Mirror and the Guardian. “Racist Boris closes borders!” It’s a lose lose situation IMO….
I don’t think they would in this context. Certainly not in the newspapers. You may get some fringe figures on social media saying it, but I can’t imagine anyone more serious doing so.
