Christmas was the pagan winter solstice. Shepherds don’t watch their flocks by night at the end of December. Not even in the Near East! The presents under a tree comes from the story of Nimrod.
As does Easter, from Ishtar the Babylonian goddess of fertility who came out of an egg.
May Day was the Celtic Beltane and Hallowe’en was Samhain. That’s because they were both astronomically midway between the equinoxes and the solstices.
Valentine’s Day was the Roman Lupercalia and the days of the week are named after Norse gods.
Not a lot of JC related stuff there!
