It does without question, however, reveal your lack of respect for other people’s religious views. I do find that offensive,
That’s absolutely fine Bucks. I respect your opinion. I know how you feel because I find patriarchal religions that subjugate women offensive. As I do societies whose rituals include the mutilation of children’s genitals.
NI’s comment smacks of this and doesn’t surprise me in the least.
You know I have Marxist leanings so you’ll know my views on religion being the “opiate of the people” so why should it surprise you? But hey! If you want to turn it into a left vs right thing go ahead. It’s what you do best.
You keep putting Christianity in the category of Man- made religions! Christianity is the only faith that believes God has revealed himself
That’s because it is man-made. Please can you answer this question – why is it that for a whole two centuries after the date commonly given for the time of Jesus (the reign of the Emperor Tiberius) there is no record of the name. Not by any Greek, Roman or Egyptian historian, scholar, politician, philosopher or poet. His name never occurs in a single inscription nor has it been found in any piece of personal correspondence.
As for God revealing himself. Well I believe Catholic priests took that one a bit too literally!
I must say that I don’t subscribe to NI’s dismissal of religious as sad or whatever. I can see how it gives comfort.
I don’t believe in deities, full-stop! How can I dismiss something that doesn’t exist?
I do fully agree on the comfort issue though. See above. Marx describing religion as the opiate of the people (slightly mis-translated from the German) meant that the poor had only religion to fall back on as pain relief. No matter how bad things are now, once you’re dead you’ll be reborn into some wonderful land.
But if you’re an atheist you have to think that this is totally wrong. This is why Bucks thinks atheism is a left-wing plot. It encourages the working classes to start thinking for themselves. To say “hang on a minute, why can’t we live a comfortable life now? Why do we have to wait until we are dead? Why do our bosses have comfortable lives but we don’t, and what can we do about it?”
Religion, like right wing politics is all about controlling the masses.
If I have offended anyone then I humbly apologise, but as I said, sometimes people need shocking to get them thinking for themselves.
I doubt very much if BPG has been offended. I suspect he enjoys a good theological argument!
