I don’t agree, Gurnelista. I think it’s this attitude which puts a lot off Labour, even if Starmer isn’t trying to go down this route of explanation. It comes across as patronising and as if Labour people don’t consider their opinions worthy.
I don’t think most in Hartlepool voted Tory out of some great love of Tory values, but it’s clear they distrust Labour. Labour should address that instead of going into theories of the public being duped.
At the end of the day, most people aren’t ideologues and don’t make some great political consideration when voting. It used to be along generational lines based on background (“I am from a Labour family and will vote Labour”), but that’s broken now. Now it’s more about who they can trust to give stability. Unfortunately, whether you agree with it or not, many don’t see Labour giving them this.
