Morris dancing? The name’s a corruption of Moorish dancing. It’s thought to have originated in Spain. Anybody who knows its north-west, or Brittany in France, will have seen similar styles of dancing at village festivals and so on.
Here, the royal courts adopted it in the 15th century, and it later became a form of popular entertainment.
Like the English language and people, so many of ‘our’ traditions are hybrid, mongrel and stronger for it.
