And Conservatives have the cheek to make out that they care about state overreach and freedoms. Ha! However, I am sure that they will have their excuses for hypocrisy. We’re already getting the Orwellian talk of how they do support protest, but want it done correctly. Right, and how do we do protest correctly when the smallest thing can lead to a criminal offense? The events in Clapham Common shows why we can’t not be sceptical.
Moreover, how can such severe sentences be approved by anyone who care remotely about fairness and liberties? Potentially 10 years for defacing a statue? That’s more than what many heinous rapists get! So the moral is statues matter more than people, and all for what? A stupid culture war the government wants to stoke. I know that the 10 years is a maximum sentence, but the optics here are very bad. And all we’ll get from the ‘small state’ loving, ‘authority sceptical’ libertarian types is “if you’re a law abiding citizen, you have nothing to worry about.”
The real issue for them is silly students on campus making daft comments, not what the actual government does. Talk about a loss of perspective.
