I do agree that the standards for the Mail are very poor, and poorer than most. I have had experiences where I have referenced a Mail article in a debate, where I am sharing it quoting a figure (using the figure’s words) and people just automatically say it’s false because the Mail says it (even though it’s not the Mail saying it, they’re just quoting). I mostly only use the Mail for this purpose (quoting an individual), because its own journalism is not great, with some exceptions. When those rare exceptions exist and when people are being quoted, ad verbatim, I feel it shouldn’t be used to dismiss the points raised. If I am criticising someone for their views I don’t think it’s a good defence to say that their words were quoted in the Mail, so are therefore not a problem because it’s the Mail.
