I don’t think the Hancock news is as grave as some made out, given it was a matter of deadlines and the public will see it as Hancock trying to focus on getting PPE in over deadline legalities.
Having said that, the shambles of the private firms in this pandemic has been laid bare, as has the general cronyism of this Tory administration.
It’s funny how the ‘small state’ loving libertarian types have extolled the virtues of the private sector above all for years, wagging fingers at the state for being the reason for failure, even in this pandemic.
Yet, the biggest British success story has been the vaccine rollout and the test and trace disaster one of its biggest failures. The former has been a success because of the NHS, which libertarians see as ‘big state’ and the failure of the latter has been that of the private sector. Yet these libertarians will jump on the vaccine success to defend this government a lot of the time, even though the success from it has not come from what their dogma sees as virtuous, and is quite the opposite in fact.
