To do nothing would be to let Trump get away with murder.
Although there are substantial numbers who would still vote Republican, it doesn’t mean they agreed with what Trump said about fighting to win, or attacking the Capitol. Many of the same people don’t want violence. They want to see the law upheld, and a failure to act would bring disunity.
Moreover, inaction would also bring disunity among the general population who want to see the law upheld, no matter who they voted for, and even if they didn’t vote.
A failure to act could also give license to anyone else who was thinking of doing the same.
