I’m sure Bucks could argue 2 + 2 = 5. After all it can be done (Google it!).
But the only similarities between the two groups he (and the right wing press) picks out is that both “lost” a ballot.
He may have well outlined the similarities between Scunthorpe United and Liverpool, because both clubs lost their last league fixture away at a club whose name begins with S.
I myself could argue that there are far more similarities between the DC protesters and our own Brexiteers. Now it’s slightly unfair to tar all leave voters with the same brush, but you know the type I’m talking about.
They are the ones who seem unaware that we have entered the third decade of the 21st Century, and prefer to live in the past. There is no doubt that the US was the Billy Big Bollocks of the 20th Century. They gave the world the film industry, jazz, swing and rock & roll. They gave us production line cars and fitted kitchens. They put men on the moon and introduced us to fast food and denim! They formulated an inspirational lifestyle that much of the western world wanted to copy. It was called “The American Dream”.
It is not unreasonable to argue that if the 20th Century belonged to the US, the 19th belonged to Britain. The time we gave the world railways, the factory system, heavy industry and sanitation. The age of the British Empire on which the sun never set.
The right wing “conservative” thinkers in both our Nations share the desire to return to these periods in their respective histories. Pressure groups have similar strap-lines – “Making America Great Again”. “Putting the Great back into Great Britain”.
Par for the course is the distrust of foreigners. They see parties to the left and centre as selling out to un-American or un-British organisations and individuals who are out to destroy their time-honoured way of life.
Of course there is no time-honoured anything. Society is constantly changing. And what the American Patriots and Little Englanders conveniently ignore is that their country’s good times were built upon bad times if you happened to be the wrong colour or from the wrong social demographic. The USA was built upon the greatest act of mass genocide the world has seen. Even in the middle of their greatest century they were still lynching black Americans. The British Empire itself was founded on the blood of countless Africans, Asians and Australians. Both time periods featured a huge gulf between rich and poor. The idea that anyone can make their fortune through someone else’s back-breaking work.
We now live in a more enlightened century yet these groups refuse to accept that they are part of a wider world. Their own comfortable lifestyle is changing and they don’t like it. It’s not their fault so who’s to blame? People who look and sound different? Liberals, Left-Wingers, Communists, Alien Lizard People who plan to inoculate us with micro chips to control our thoughts?
So they are easy pickings for the bullshit orators like Trump and Farage who will tell them that they are the moral, upstanding, salt of the earth citizens and everyone else is out to destroy their livelihoods. Let’s all look inwards not outwards.
Cutting yourself off from the rest of the world because they won’t play by your rules is never a good idea and that’s why I am a committed pro-European.
