Why does it matter what we did or didn’t do before? There is evidence that it helps prevent others from getting infected, even if it doesn’t greatly impact risk to yourself. Many Asians have been masking up for prevention of the spread of respiratory diseases since the SARS outbreak in the early 00s. We haven’t, because that didn’t impact us so much. People probably won’t wear it after the pandemic, because there are negatives, but during a pandemic precautions are needed when other means of mitigations are not developed.
Life is not without risk, deaths from coronavirus may be here for a while, but we can greatly reduce them. Yet we have people moaning that one aspect of reducing risk is to put a mask over their face, as if the real tragedy is people having to wear something they don’t want, not that people are dying in larger numbers than they could be.
